Rules for the use of “there is” and “there are”

1.) “There are” does not have short form.


 There are two houses. 

2.) We put a or an after there is / there’s / there is not / there isn’t. We use an
when the noun starts with a vowel.

 There’s a sandwich on the bed.

 There’s an apple on the table.


3.) After there are we put some or a number.

 There are some books on the shelf.

 There are twenty books on the shelf.


Rules for the use of “there is” and “there are”

4.) After there are not / there aren’t we put any or a number.

 There aren’t two beds in my room.

 There are not any posters in my room.


5.) When we make a list of things, we use there is when the first noun is
singular.

 There is an armchair and two posters in my room.

 Not: There are an armchair and two posters in my room.


6.) When the first noun in a list is plural, we use there are.

There are four chairs and a table.

Not: There is four chairs and a table.
