CONCEPTS OF HUMAN FACTORS IN AVIATION

1. Definition of Human Factors

2. Importance of Human Factors

3. Components of Human Factors

Definition of Human Factors (ICAO) :
Human Factors is about people:
it is about people in their working and living environments, and it
is about their relationship with equipment, procedures and the
environment. Just as important, it is about their relationship with
other people. It involves the overall performance of human
beings within the aviation system. Human Factors seeks to
optimize the performance of people by the systematic application
of the human sciences, often integrated within the framework of
system engineering.
The objectives of the studying Human Factors are
1. Safety and
2. Efficiency.
Importance of Human Factors

Human Factors are involved in 100 % of all the accidents.

Human error 100%
The accident investigation reports:

1. People were technically competent,

2. But their people (human) skills were deficient.

3. They failed to use all the available resources.

4. As a result accident occurred.
HUMAN FACTORS/RESOURCES FOR JOB PERFORMACE

Human Factors/Resources are:

1. Good mind 10. Leadership
2. Good body 11. Followership
3. Time 12. Critique
4. Money 13. Briefing etc
5. Training 14. Many Others.
6. Memory
7. Communication
8. Decision making
9. Conflict Resolution
We do our jobs by the use of the job resources.

Our failure in the use of resources leads to failure in the job.

Failure in the job performance leads to all the losses. e.g.

1. Air accident
2. Rail accident
3. Boat accident
4. Building collapse
5. Death in the hospitals.

The most important and the fundamental resource for job

performance is GOOD MIND.
On 22 March 2017 an extraordinary, highly genius PhD student RONG
'jumped from a Cessna and committed suicide’.

RONG
Failed to use
MIND, best possible

Rong was studying human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence.

22 March 2017
Our Good Mind is the best and is the number 1 resource.

The good mind has three basic functions:

1. Good Thinking (Thoughts),

2. Good Feeling , and

3. Good Wanting (Desires).

Bad Mind is the main cause of all the unhappy incidents.

The bad mind has three basic functions:

1. Bad Thinking (Thoughts),

2. Bad Feeling , and

3. Bad Wanting (Desires).

The Relevance of Human Factors in Aviation
Human Factors is relevant wherever and whenever the human
being is involved in aviation. It plays a vital role to promote
efficiency and safety in every facet of the aviation. It promotes:
• Safety and efficiency. • Health, fitness and well-being.
• Operating skills. • Awareness of the areas of human error.
• Judgement and decision making. • Leadership qualities. • Crew
coordination. • Efficient design of: • Aircraft, cockpit, instrument
and control layouts. • Operating procedures. • Checklists.
• Charts. • Training procedures.
• Efficient and comfortable working environments.
• Efficient personnel selection.
• Efficient communications.l
