What is succession management?
• It is a proactive and systematic process where organizations identify
those positions considered to be at the core of the organization and then
create a strategic plan to fill those positions with qualified and capable
employees.
• It is also called succession planning.
Who uses succession management?
• It is often used by HR managers as they manage resources through
succession process and find right person for right position.
Importance of succession planning :
 It provides a way to identify key roles, people with right skills and
positions that needed to be fill within short period of time.
 It provides a way to cut the costs of recruitment.
 It enable organizations to manage recruitment in-house.
 It also allows candidates to come forward for open positions.
 It is designed to help organization to recognize future leaders.
 It also has a great impact in creating and maintaining good gender
diversity in senior roles.
Process of succession planning:
1. Identify key areas and position.
2. Ascertaining competencies for key areas and positions.
3. Identify interested and potential candidates and assess them as per
competencies.
4. Develop and implement succession strategies.
5. Evaluate effectiveness.

 First the key business areas are identified.
 Then the position which if vacant can cause difficulty in achieving
business goal.
2. Ascertaining competencies for key areas and positions:
 Determine the required competencies for key areas and positions.
 And fill the differences with training and development process.

them as per competencies:
 After competencies is analyzed next step is to identify potential
candidates working in the organization.
 HR manager discuss future career plans to the candidates and identifies
potential successors.
4.Develop and implement succession strategies :
 Strategies for learning, training, knowledge transfer is developed and
implemented on the successors.
5.Evaluate Effectiveness:
 The last step is to evaluate succession planning and management.
 It is to ensure that all the key areas and positions are covered.
