USE OF CONCRETE IN BANGLADESH
• Concrete is the principal ingredient in
rapidly expanding construction industry of
Bangladesh.

DHAKA CITY DEVELOPMENT
• Dhaka is the capital city of Bangladesh.
• In recent years, many old buildings mainly
constructed from brick aggregate concrete are
demolished to give away space for new construction.

Disposal of Demolition Concrete Waste
• Disposal of demolition waste from these brick
aggregate concrete buildings has become a big
problem for construction industry.

Density, Absorption, and Voids in Hardened Concrete Test

Oven dry mass of concrete cube specimen Saturated mass after immersion

Saturated mass after boiling Apparent mass of specimen

Calculation
Absorption after immersion, % = [(B – A)/A] 100
Absorption after immersion and boiling, % =[(C – A)/A] 100
Bulk density, dry = [A/(C-D)] ρ
Bulk density after immersion = [B/(C – D)]×ρ
Bulk density after immersion and boiling = [C/(C – D)]×ρ
Apparent density = [A/(A – D)]×ρ
Volume of permeable pore space (voids), % = (C – A)/(C – D)×100

where:
A = mass of oven-dried sample in air, g
B = mass of surface-dry sample in air after immersion, g
C = mass of surface-dry sample in air after immersion and
boiling, g
D = apparent mass of sample in water after immersion
moreover, boiling, g
ρ = density of water

Findings
 Compared with the first class brick aggregate commonly
used in Bangladesh, the recycled aggregates show better
performance with respect to cost and strength value.
 By recycling, it is possible to make concrete with higher
strength compared with the in-situ strength of concrete
 Additionally, it has been observed that coefficient of
permeability in RBCAC is 350 to 400% higher than SAC
of corresponding compressive strength
 Porosity and water absorption was found to be almost
twice in RBCAC with respect to corresponding value for
SAC.
