Basic Skills and Drills in

Volleyball
Dig Pass

• Also called a pass or bump

• Hitting the ball with your forehand and passing it to
the next player who sets or tosses the ball
• Usually done when receiving the ball in preparation
for an attack
Dig Pass
How to Perform a Dig Pass

1. Have one leg slightly in front to push the ball towards the setter
2. Both arms together with forearms facing the setter
3. Shrug the shoulders to keep a firm and stable platform on the
forearms; don’t lock the elbows, only straight and firm
4. Do not swing the arms when passing the ball; use your legs to
push the ball upward using the forearms as a platform where the
ball should land

peak of the ball in the middle and landing almost exactly

• Continuous Receiving
1. Both players will receive the ball continuously, keeping the ball
flying for as long as they can

is lower than the players’ heights, they will start again from the
beginning

• Group Continuous Receiving

1. 6-8 players may form a group, forming 2 lines w/ same
no. of members per line; lines should face each other
2. Players in front will start, w/ one throwing the ball
and the other receiving; both will go behind their line
after receiving, letting the next players take their
place
3. Process continues until ball is successfully returned
more than 30 times; otherwise, players will start all
over again

• Stopping the Ball

1. One player acts as feeder on the other side of
the court
2. Players on receiving side will line up on left,
middle, and right sides in the attack line as
receivers; one player in the middle zone will
act as setter
3. Feeder will pass the ball to the receiver of each
line, who will then pass the ball to the setter
Toss

• Most likely the second contact of a play

• Tossing a ball up in the air in order for the spiker to hit the ball
properly and to make a successful attack to score a point
• Setter coordinates offensive movements and decides which player
will hit the ball
Toss
How to Perform a Toss

• Position your hands as if you are holding the ball with both hands
• Position your hands above your forehead, with elbows raised at shoulder
level
• Bend your arms as the ball drops as if you’re absorbing the ball landing
towards you; under the ball, with the ball in between both hands
• Push the ball up as it touches your fingers, avoiding holding it too long
or having double contact since it will be called as a violation; only your
fingers should touch the ball
• Always follow through; your hands must be pointed upwards after
tossing the ball and towards the person you are setting the ball to

• Throw and Catch

• Players A and B should be at least 1 foot away, facing each other;
Player B sits while A is standing up in front of B
• Similar steps to the “Throw and Catch” drill in a dig pass, but this
time following the steps in performing a toss
