DESIGN OF A LEVER

SAFETY VALVE
ABHIJITH SANKER T
Roll No 1
M1 MD
OBJECTIVES
• To model and assemble the parts of a lever safety valve using a
modelling software
• To generate the 2D drawings of various parts
• To design the valve for find the blow off pressure
LEVER SAFETY VALVE
• It is used to maintain a constant safe pressure inside the boiler
• When the pressure inside the boiler increases the safe value, the
excess steam blows off through the valve automatically
• The weights and its distance from the fulcrum are so adjusted
• When the steam pressure acting upward on the valve exceeds the
normal limit, it lifts the valve and the lever with its weights

2D drawings of parts

• Body and Cover

• Weight,Counter weight,fulcrum and stirrup
• Valve,valve seat,bush and lever
• Nut, Bolt
Design
•  Distance from the fulcrum point O to counter weight centre, = 145 mm
• Distance from the fulcrum point O to bearing centre = 64 mm
• Distance from the fulcrum point O to weight centre, = 670 mm
Design
•   moments about fulcrum point O
Taking
×= F× - W×

For the Weight, density , ρ = 7.2 g/ (for Grey C.I)

volume, V = h
= × × 96 ×
= 2.19 ×

Weight , W = ρVg
= 7.2 × kg/ × 2.19 × × 9.81 m/
= 15.47 N
•For
  the Counter Weight; density , ρ = 7.2 g/ (for Grey C.I)
volume, V = = 0.150 ×
0.1 × 0. 07
= 1.05 ×

Counter Weight, = ρVg

= 7.2 × kg/ ×1.05 × × 9.81 m/
= 74.163 N
•  Applying in the equation
74.163 × 0.145 = F × 0.064 – 15.47 × 0.67
Maximum steam load, F = 330 N
If p is the pressure acting on the valve
×p=F
d = diameter of the opening of the valve
= 52. 2 mm
× p = 330
p = 154081 Pa
= 0.154 MPa
