What is Research?

• Any attempt to find a new thing or

improving the existing one

• Who can do?

Any body
Types of Research

• Basic Research
– More powerful
• Applied Research
- Application oriented
Basic Research

Benefits of Publishing a
Research paper

 Research work
gets exposed to
the world.

 Career
Development
Tips to write a paper or thesis
• Command over English Language is inevitable.
• High-quality articulation is essential.
• Do not use the words “ first-of-its-kind”, “ unique”.
Better to use “To the best of the Knowledge of the
Authors........”.
• Your work can be emphasised but do not criticise the
previous works too much
• Add a section on “ Critique on Literature” and
“Novelty” to impress the Reviewers
• Do not use “I” and “we”.
• Everything has to be in third person only.
• General facts are to written in Present
tense.
• Literature review and Experimentation
Details have to be written in Past tense.
• Do not send the paper already published
in another journal or conference.
• No similar paper is to be published unless
at least 60% of the content is different.
• Check carefully the printing proof especially the
references before it gets published. You alone is
responsible for the content.

• Proper citation is essential. However, it should

be remembered that citation does not entitle you
to copy the chunk of the already published
paper.

• Do not take more than two sentences.

How to evaluate a Journal?

• Impact Factor –
An index for quality of a journal.
• Higher the impact Factor –

Higher the quality of a journal.

• Given by the THOMSON REUTERS JCR
• Nature has the highest impact factor of
around 40.
How is Impact factor calculated?

• The impact factor (IM) for a journal is calculated based

on a three-year period.
• IM = the number of times articles cited / the number of
articles published
• Example: For the following data of a journal, IM for 2012 =
290/160 = 1.81
2010 2011 2012
No. of times cited 100 40 150
Total articles 50 60 50

• The impact factor for the year 2012 is given in 2013.

Some popular ISI
(Institute for Scientific Information )
impact Factor Journals

• IEEE : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

• Elsevier
• Springer-Verlog
• ASME :  American Society of Mechanical Engineers
• ASCE : American Society of Civil Engineers
• Taylor-Francis
• SAGE
PUBLICATION IN THOMSON REUTERS JOURNAL IS
MANDATORY FOR A RESEARCHER IN JNTUK
How to evaluate an article?
 Citation Index
– No. of times the article is referred by
other indexed journals
– Higher the citation index, higher the
quality of the article

 i-10 index
- No. of publications
with at least 10 citations
How to evaluate a Researcher?
• h-Factor (named after Hirsch, a Physicist)
A scientist has index h if h of his/her Np papers
have at least h citations each, and the other
(Np − h) papers have no more than h citations
each.
• It is a sort of measuring quantity and
quality of articles/papers/patents.
• A good researcher should have both
optimal level of quality and quantity of
research output.
Example – h index
Serial No Article No.of
Title citations
1 DEF 40

2 ABC 30 First arrange the papers in the

descending order with regard
3 XVE 26
to the number of citations.
4 ERS 18

5 RSS 14 An h-index of 8 means

6 WER 11 that this researcher has
7 TQS 9 published at least 8
8 VWX 9
papers that have each
9 QAC 4
received at least 8
citations.
10 ASE 3
