Bus structure

• The MP-410X backplane is a passive device with a dual star

architecture
• Every Module has access to a TDM bus and Packet bus
– TDM bus capacity 32mbps
– Packet bus capacity
• Either 1 FE for data and 1 FE for control/management
• Or 1GbE of data plus control plus management
• These module busses are not shared, there is one set of busses for
each module in the chassis
• Each Common Logic sits on all the busses of all the modules, allowing
them to link to each module without bottle necks

00 MP intro 9
Managing the Megaplex-410X

The Megaplex can be managed in several ways

• RS-232 control port (out-of-band) - Terminal
• Control Ethernet port, any user Ethernet port on CL or I/O
cards (out-of-band and in-band using dedicated VLAN) -
Telnet
• From any MAC entity via SDH/SONET links using telnet or
SNMP (in-band) using DCC
• Any E1/T1 or SHDSL link using telnet or SNMP (in-band
dedicated timeslot)
• The optical port on the MP-OP108C using a proprietary
protocol (in-band)
• Via the SHDSL ports of the MP-ASM cards using EOC (in-
band)

Structure of the CLI
The prompt

• The base prompt is the name of the unit followed by #

• The default case of the base prompt is:

– mp4100#
– This name can be configured on the system level
• The $ sign is the prompt that you get when you are defining a new
entity
• Commands can be entered when you see the prompt
• Commands can be saved in a text file and executed
– These are called scripts
– Can be activated at any prompt

00 MP intro 12
Navigation

• CLI commands are in a tree structure

– Global Commands work anywhere
– Local Commands only work at the current level of the tree
• Navigate down the tree
– Type the name of the next level
– The prompt will now show the new location followed by #
• Navigate up the tree use the command exit
– exit is a Global Command
– exit all takes you back to the root
• To list all the commands available to you type ?

00 MP intro 13
CLI Commands - format

CLI commands have the following basic format:

command [parameter]{value1 | value2 | … | valuen}
[optional parameter <value>]
Where:
• {} Indicates that one of the values must be selected
• [] Indicates an optional parameter
• <> Indicates a value to be replaced by user text

00 MP intro 14
Keyboard usage with the CLI

The following keys are available at any time:

• ? Lists all commands available at the current level
• <Tab> Command autocomplete and verification
• <Ctrl-E> Logs out
• <Ctrl-U> Erases the line
• ↑ Displays the previous command
• ↓ Displays the next command
• <Backspace> Deletes character
• <Ctrl-C> Interrupts current command
• <Ctrl-Z> Returns to the device prompt (root)

00 MP intro 15
Global Commands

• echo [<text-to-echo>] Echoes the specified text

• exec <file-name> [echo] Executes a file, optionally echoing
the commands
• help [hotkeys] [globals] Displays general help, or
optionally just the hotkeys and/or global commands
• history Displays the command history for the current session (by
default the history contains the last 10 commands)
• info [detail] Displays information on the current configuration
• tree [detail] Displays all lower command levels and
commands accessible from the current context level

00 MP intro 16
Configuration File databases in the MP

Megaplex-4100/4104 uses the following reserved file names:

• factory-default – Contains the factory default settings. Read
only!
• running-config – Contains the current user configuration that is
different from the default configuration
• startup-config – Contains the saved non-default user
configuration (stored in flash). You must save or copy to this file;
it is not automatically created
• user-default-config – Contains default user configuration. You
must copy to this file; it is not automatically created
• candidate – Stores any configuration changes done by CLI
before it is copied to running-config via the commit command
• main-sw contains the active software image.
00 MP intro 17
Some important Configuration File
commands
• commit Update the candidate database to the running
database
• sanity-check Initiates a self test of the device
• save Saves current settings

• Warning! commit does NOT save. The running-config is not stored

unless you save!
00 MP intro 18
Loading sequence

• At startup, the MP boots from the startup-config file, the user-default

file, or the factory-default file, in the sequence shown. If none of
these files exist, the MP boots using hard-coded defaults.

00 MP intro 19
Factory reset

• In CLI: File delete startup-config

• Admin Reboot
– Takes a couple of minutes
– With the Startup-config deleted the MP will use the User-Default-Config
– If there is not User-Default-Config the MP will use Factory-Default

• Use Telnet to reach the MP via the Async control port

• Use the script to load the configuration

00 MP intro 20
Some standard tasks you may need in the
future – do not use these today

1. Setup the MP-4100 IP address

2. Change the MP-4100 SW version
3. Download the config file to your PC
4. Upload the config file from your PC

00 MP intro 21
Setup the MP-4100 IP address

• The IP address of the MP is given to interface 1 of router 1

• Setup is simple – at the prompt mp4100#

• Enter: configure router 1 interface 1 address
172.17.195.74/24
• The /24 is the subnet mask
• Don’t forget to COMMIT and SAVE

00 MP intro 22
Change the MP-4100 SW version

• Ensure that you have Ethernet connectivity between your PC/laptop

and the MP chassis
– Ping the chassis and ensure that the ping is answered
• Ensure that you have a TFTP server on your computer
– We use 3CDaemon but any TFTP server software will do
– Ensure that the TFTP server is pointing to the directory that holds the
file
• Enter the following two commands to the MP:
file copy tftp://<your PC IP>/<file name> sw-pack-2
Wait for completion and then enter
admin software install sw-pack-2
Finally: admin reboot
• IMPORTANT: See notes on next slide
00 MP intro 23
Notes on the SW upload

• Replace <your PC IP> with your own IP address

• Reconfirm that this address is on the same subnet as the MP
• Use the complete file name including the file type suffix
• sw-pack-2 – you can use any sw-pack number from 1 to 4

00 MP intro 24
Download the config file to your PC

• Ensure that you have Ethernet connectivity between your PC/laptop
