Why study IT?

Expected Growth
The revenue across India's booming offshore IT software and services industry grew by 33 per
cent over the last year, hitting a new high of US$13.3 billion
According to Kiran Karnik, president, NASSCOM, this continued level of growth would put India's
offshore outsourcing industry on target to hit revenues of US$ 60 billion by 2010.

A separate report by Everest (Research firm)

claimed that India would maintain its low-cost IT skills
advantage in the offshore outsourcing market for at least
another 30 years.

According to an IDC study, by the end of 2010, the

Indian IT industry will grow from US$ 18.7 billion in 2005
to US$ 53 billion.
Why study IT?

Exports from the sector have grown 48 per cent in 2007- 2008 to US$
4.6 billion, up from US$ 3.1 billion the year before, says NASSCOM. Indian
ITeS-
BPO exports are estimated to grow to US$ 6.3 billion by
the end of fiscal 2009-2010.
Why study IT?

Net employment in the sector is estimated to

have grown by approximately 100,000 in 2008-
2009.
Nasscom estimates that the sector would add
roughly about 300,000
people every
year and would be employing 2
million people by 2009.

Outsourcing continues to be the main source of growth in IT services and has

become a mainstream business practice for companies. A Gartner statement said:
"By 2009 outsourcing will make up for 56 per cent of the IT services
market," creating millions of jobs for young and educated Indians and attracting
investments from countless countries from the Western world.

Industry Speak

“The excellent performance of the Indian software and services industry

once again reinforces our confidence that the industry is on course to meet
the projected target of USD 60 billion exports by FY 10, as projected in the
NASSCOM McKinsey Report. This growth is also reflected in the
employment trends, both direct and indirect, which according to our estimates
is to the tune of 4.3 million.”
-Kiran Karnik, president, Nasscom

“India is increasing its profile in the world economy and we

are now seen as a major global player. Indian influences
permeate every sphere of the globe, including corporate

With revenues across India's booming offshore IT software and services industry
growing by 33 per cent over the last year, hitting a new high of US$ 13.3 billion,
Indian software companies are expected to create 2.3 million jobs by 2010 and an
additional 6.5 million indirectly.

This "Information Age" has created a demand for highly skilled professionals in electrical and
computer engineering, telecommunications, and information systems. With a huge demand
in the offering, salaries are bound to go north.

With various MNCs and Indian organisations on a major hiring

spree, it will be the talent, which will be in shortage. And the
salaries, perks and incentives can substantially rise up to 13-14 per cent.
This boom in IT has also led to the development of rural areas,
setting up of IT parks etc. This indicates that the growth trend will
continue for long.
So for those techies wish to make their mark in the IT world, keep IT going!
