BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY

 It happened on 3rd December ,1984

Plant was of Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL)

Release of 42 tonnes of Methyl Isocynate (MIC)

Reason was lack of maintenance of safety measures.

3787 people died immediately due to the gas leak


UNION CARBIDE INDIA LIMITED (UCIL)
Started in 1969 in Bhopal

Union carbide used MIC to produce a insecticide called


“CARBARYL”

Batteries, carbon products, welding equipment,


plastics, industrial chemicals, pesticides, and marine
products.
CAUSES FOR THE DISASTER
The use of hazardous chemicals (MIC)

Storing MIC in large tanks and filling beyond


recommended levels

Possibility of corroding material in pipelines.

Poor maintenance

Failure of several safety systems

Safety systems being switched off to save money


METHYL ISOCYANATE

It is clear,colourless,sharp smelling liquid

It is highly inflammable

Extremely toxic

Volatile reaction with water in about 10 minutes

Birth defects among children born to affected women

GOVERNMENT ACTION

 Compensation

 Permanently disabled - Rs five lakh

 Partially disabled - Rs three lakh.
