Abraham:

A Man Committed to
the Plan
Lesson 3
Sunday School-Genesis Series
Read Genesis
11:27-16:16 and
21:1-7.
 Gen 11:27 Now these are the generations of Terah:
Terah fathered Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran
fathered Lot.
 Gen 11:28 And Haran died before his father Terah in
the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
 Gen 11:29 And Abram and Nahor took wives for
themselves. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai.
And the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter
of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of
Iscah.
 Gen 11:30 But Sarai was barren. She had no child.
 Gen 11:31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot, the son
of Haran, his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his
son Abram's wife. And he went forth with them from Ur of
the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan. And they came
to Haran and lived there.
 Gen 11:32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and
five years. And Terah died in Haran.
 Gen 12:1 And Jehovah said to Abram, Go out of
your country, and from your kindred, and from your
father's house into a land that I will show you.
 Gen 12:2 And I will make you a great nation. And I
will bless you and make your name great. And you
shall be a blessing.
 Gen 12:3 And I will bless those that bless you
and curse the one who curses you. And in you
shall all families of the earth be blessed.
 Gen 12:4 And Abram departed, even as Jehovah
had spoken to him. And Lot went with him. And
Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed
from Haran.
 Gen 12:5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot
his brother's son, and all their substance that they
had gathered, and the souls that they had gained in
Haran. And they went forth to go into the land of
Canaan. And they came into the land of Canaan.
 Gen 12:6 And Abram passed through the land to the place
of Shechem, unto the Oak of Moreh. And the Canaanite
was then in the land.
 Gen 12:7 And Jehovah appeared to Abram and said, I will
give this land to your seed. And he built an altar there to
Jehovah who appeared to him.
 Gen 12:8 And he moved from there to a mountain on the
east of Bethel. And he pitched his tent with Bethel toward
the sea and Hai on the east. And he built an altar there to
Jehovah, and called upon the name of Jehovah.
 Gen 12:9 And Abram journeyed, going on and
pulled up stakes toward the south.
 Gen 12:10 And there was a famine in the land. And
Abram went down into Egypt to stay there, for the
famine was grievous in the land.
 Gen 12:11 And it happened, when he had come
near to enter into Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife,
Behold now, I know that you are a beautiful woman
to look upon.
 Gen 12:12 And it will be when the Egyptians see
you, they shall say, This is his wife. And they will
kill me, but they will save you alive.
 Gen 12:13 I pray you, say that you are my sister, so
that it may be well with me for your sake. And my
soul shall live because of you.
 Gen 12:14 And it happened when Abram had come
into Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was
very beautiful.
 Gen 12:15 The princes of Pharaoh also saw her and
commended her before Pharaoh. And the woman
was taken into Pharaoh's house.
 Gen 12:16 And he treated Abram well for her sake.
And he had sheep, and oxen, and he-asses, and male
servants, and maidservants, and she-asses, and
camels.
 Gen 12:17 And Jehovah plagued Pharaoh and his
house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's
wife.
 Gen 12:18 And Pharaoh called Abram and said,
What is this you have done to me? Why did you not
tell me that she is your wife?
 Gen 12:19 Why did you say, She is my sister? And
so I was about to take her to me as wife. Now
therefore behold your wife. Take her and go.
 Gen 12:20 And Pharaoh commanded men
concerning him. And they sent him away, and his
wife, and all that he had.
 Gen 13:1 And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and
his wife, and all that he had, (and Lot was with him)
into the south.
 Gen 13:2 And Abram was very rich in cattle, in
silver and in gold.
 Gen 13:3 And he went on his journeys from the
south, even to Bethel, to the place where his tent had
been from the beginning, between Bethel and Hai,
 Gen 13:4 to the place of the altar which he had
made there at the first. And Abram called on the
name of Jehovah there.
 Gen 13:5 And Lot, who went with Abram, also had
flocks and herds and tents.
 Gen 13:6 And the land was not able to bear them,
that they might live together. For their substance
was great, so that they could not live together.
 Gen 13:7 And there was strife between the herdsmen of
Abram's cattle and the herdsmen of Lot's cattle. And the
Canaanite and the Perizzite lived then in the land.
 Gen 13:8 And Abram said to Lot, Let there be no strife, I
pray you, between me and you, and between my herdsmen
and your herdsmen; for we are men, brothers.
 Gen 13:9 Is not the whole land before you? I pray you,
separate yourself from me. If you go to the left, then I will
go to the right. Or if you go to the right, then I will go to
the left.
 Gen 13:10 And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the
circuit of Jordan, that it was all well watered (before
Jehovah destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah,) like the garden
of Jehovah, like the land of Egypt as you come to Zoar.
 Gen 13:11 And Lot chose all the circuit of Jordan for
himself. And Lot journeyed east; and they separated
themselves from one another.
 Gen 13:12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, and Lot
lived in the cities of the circuit and pitched his tent toward
Sodom.
 Gen 13:13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and
sinners before Jehovah, exceedingly so.
 Gen 13:14 And after Lot was separated from him,
Jehovah said to Abram, Lift up your eyes now and
look from the place where you are northward and
southward, and eastward and westward.
 Gen 13:15 For all the land which you see I will give
to you, and to your seed forever.
 Gen 13:16 And I will make your seed as the dust of
the earth, so that if a man can count the dust of the
earth, then shall your seed also be counted.
 Gen 13:17 Rise up and walk through the land, in the
length of it and in the breadth of it, for I will give it
to you.
 Gen 13:18 And Abram moved his tent and came and
lived in the oaks of Mamre, which is in Hebron. And
he built an altar to Jehovah there.
 Gen 14:1 And it happened in the days of Amraphel
king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar,
Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of
nations,
 Gen 14:2 they made war with Bera king of Sodom,
and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of
Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboim, and the king
of Bela, which is Zoar.
 Gen 14:3 All these were joined together in the
valley of Siddim, which is the Salt Sea.
 Gen 14:4 They served Chedorlaomer twelve years,
and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
 Gen 14:5 And in the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer
and the kings that were with him came and struck
the giants in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzim in
Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim,
 Gen 14:6 and the Horites in their Mount Seir, as far
as the oak of Paran, which is by the wilderness.
 Gen 14:7 And they returned, and came to En-mishpat, which is
Kadesh, and struck all the country of the Amalekites, and also the
Amorites who lived in Hazazon-tamar.
 Gen 14:8 And the king of Sodom went out, and the king of
Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboim, and the
king of Bela (which is Zoar). And they joined battle with them in
the valley of Siddim;
 Gen 14:9 with Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal the
king of nations, and Amraphel the king of Shinar, and Arioch the
king of Ellasar, four kings with five.
 Gen 14:10 And the valley of Siddim was full of
asphalt pits. And the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah
fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the
mountain.
 Gen 14:11 And they took all the goods of Sodom and
Gomorrah, and all their food, and went their way.
 Gen 14:12 And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son,
who lived in Sodom, and all his goods, and went
away.
 Gen 14:13 And there came one who had escaped. And he told
Abram the Hebrew, for he lived in the plains of Mamre the
Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner. And these had a
covenant with Abram.
 Gen 14:14 And when Abram heard that his brother was taken
captive, he led forth his trained servants, born in his own house
(three hundred and eighteen) and pursued them to Dan.
 Gen 14:15 And he divided himself against them by night, he and
his servants. And he struck them, and pursued them to Hobah,
which is on the left of Damascus.
 Gen 14:16 And he brought back all the goods, and also
brought back his brother Lot and his goods, and the women
also, and the people.
 Gen 14:17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him
after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer and of
the kings with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the
king's valley.
 Gen 14:18 And Melchizedek the king of Salem brought
forth bread and wine. And he was the priest of the most
high God.
 Gen 14:19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed
be Abram of the most high God, possessor of
Heaven and earth.
 Gen 14:20 And blessed be the most high God, who
has delivered your enemies into your hand. And he
gave him tithes of all.
 Gen 14:21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram,
Give me the people and take the goods for yourself.
 Gen 14:22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have
lifted up my hand to Jehovah, the most high God, the
possessor of Heaven and earth,
 Gen 14:23 that I will take from all that is yours, not from
a thread even to a shoestring, lest you say, I have made
Abram rich.
 Gen 14:24 Nothing for me, only that which the young
men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with
me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.
 Gen 15:1 After these things the Word of Jehovah
came to Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram,
I am your shield and your exceeding great reward.
 Gen 15:2 And Abram said, Lord God, what will You
give me, since I am going childless, and the steward
of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?
 Gen 15:3 And Abram said, Behold, You have given
no seed to me. And behold, one born in my house is
my heir.
 Gen 15:4 And behold, the Word of Jehovah came to him
saying, This one shall not be your heir. But he that shall
come forth out of your own bowels shall be your heir.
 Gen 15:5 And He brought him outside and said, Look
now toward the heavens and count the stars, if you are
able to count them. And He said to him, So shall your
seed be.
 Gen 15:6 And he believed in Jehovah. And He counted it
to him for righteousness.
 Gen 15:7 And He said to him, I am Jehovah that
brought you out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give you
this land to inherit it.
 Gen 15:8 And he said, Lord God, by what shall I
know that I shall inherit it?
 Gen 15:9 And He said to him, Take Me a heifer of
three years old, and a she-goat of three years old,
and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a
young pigeon.
 Gen 15:10 And he took all these to himself, and divided
them in the middle, and laid each piece against one
another; but he did not divide the birds.
 Gen 15:11 And when the birds of prey came down upon
the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
 Gen 15:12 And it happened as the sun was setting, and a
deep sleep fell upon Abram. And, behold, a horror of great
darkness fell upon him!
 Gen 15:13 And He said to Abram, You must surely know
that your seed shall be a stranger in a land not theirs, and
shall serve them. And they shall afflict them four hundred
years.
 Gen 15:14 And also I will judge that nation whom they
shall serve. And afterward they shall come out with great
substance.
 Gen 15:15 And you shall go to your fathers in peace. You
shall be buried in a good old age.
 Gen 15:16 But in the fourth generation they shall come
here again, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
 Gen 15:17 And it happened, the sun went down, and it
was dark and behold, a smoking furnace, and a burning
lamp passed between those pieces.
 Gen 15:18 In the same day Jehovah made a covenant
with Abram, saying, I have given this land to your seed,
from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river
Euphrates,
 Gen 15:19 the Kenites, and the
Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,
 Gen 15:20 and the Hittites, and the
Perizzites, and the giants,
 Gen 15:21 and the Amorites, and the
Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the
Jebusites.
 Gen 16:1 Now Sarai, Abram's wife, did not bear. And she had a
female slave, an Egyptian, and her name was Hagar.
 Gen 16:2 And Sarai said to Abram, Behold now, Jehovah has kept
me from bearing. I pray you, go in to my slave woman. It may be
that I may be built by her. And Abram listened to the voice of
Sarai.
 Gen 16:3 And Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar her slave woman,
the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife
(after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan).
 Gen 16:4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived.
And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress
was despised in her eyes.
 Gen 16:5 And Sarai said to Abram, My wrong be upon
you. I have given my slave woman into your bosom, and
when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in
her eyes. Jehovah judge between me and you.
 Gen 16:6 But Abram said to Sarai, Behold, your slave
woman is in your hand. Do to her as it pleases you. And
Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face.
 Gen 16:7 And the Angel of Jehovah found her by a
fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain
in the way to Shur.
 Gen 16:8 And He said, Hagar, Sarai's slave, where
did you come from? and where will you go? And
she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.
 Gen 16:9 And the Angel of Jehovah said to her,
Return to your mistress and submit yourself under
her hands.
 Gen 16:10 And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, I will
multiply your seed exceedingly, so that it shall not be
numbered for multitude.
 Gen 16:11 And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, Behold,
you are with child, and shall bear a son. And you shall call
his name Ishmael, because Jehovah has heard your
affliction.
 Gen 16:12 And he will be a wild man. His hand will be
against every man, and every man's hand against him. And
he shall live in the presence of all his brothers.
 Gen 16:13 And she called the name of Jehovah who had
spoken to her, You are a God of vision! For she said, Even
here have I looked after Him that sees me?
 Gen 16:14 Therefore the well was called The Well of the
Living One Seeing Me. Behold, it is between Kadesh and
Bered.
 Gen 16:15 And Hagar bore Abram a son. And Abram
called his son's name, which Hagar bore, Ishmael.
 Gen 16:16 And Abram was eighty-six years old when
Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
 Gen 21:1 And Jehovah visited Sarah as He
had said. And Jehovah did to Sarah as He had
spoken.
 Gen 21:2 For Sarah conceived and bore
Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of
which God had spoken to him.
 Gen 21:3 And Abraham called the name of his
son that was born to him (whom Sarah bore to
him) Isaac.
 Gen 21:4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when
he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.
 Gen 21:5 And Abraham was a hundred years old when his
son Isaac was born to him.
 Gen 21:6 And Sarah said, God has made me laugh, so that
all who hear will laugh with me.
 Gen 21:7 And she said, Who could have said to Abraham,
will Sarah suckle children? For I have borne a son to him
in his old age.

SUMMARY
Abraham
 principal character of the Bible and of world history.
 members of three major world religions now revere
him as their great patriarch or father.
 he made a major move, had a name change, and
literally became the father of many nations
 had grown up with his father and three brothers in their
hometown of Ur in southern Babylonia.
 He was married but had no children yet when, for some
reason, his father decided to move the family to the land
of Canaan, more than 1,000 miles on the other side of the
Arabian Desert
 The family migrated north about 700 miles up the
Mesopotamian Valley and settled in Haran where Abram’s
father died.
 The family of immigrants was about halfway to Canaan
when God issued a personal call to Abram.
 However, God wanted Abram
to know and to commit
himself to the plan.
Why do you think God chose Abram (rather
than someone else)?
Why did God change Abram’s and Sarai’s
names in Genesis 17?
How did God intend to “bless all
the nations” through Abraham
and his descendants?
One of the most difficult lessons for
Abraham and his Jewish descendants
to learn was …
 they were blessed by God so that He
could use them as a channel of blessing
to all the nations.
 We must each respond to His invitation
and answer His call.
 And as we receive the blessings of
knowing Him, we must still remember
that Jesus is actually not our “personal
savior.” He is the Savior of the whole
world.
In what way(s) is God’s call
to Abram similar to Jesus’
call to His disciples in the
New Testament? (Matthew
4:19, Luke 9:23)
