Abstract

• Abrasive water jet machining (AWJM) is a unique, ‘cold’ machining process and therefore
has been chosen in this research work as this machining has a higher material removal
rate (MRR), relatively no tool wear rate (TWR) and nearly no heat-affected zone (HAZ).
The principle of AWJM is that, it utilizes a high-velocity stream of water at about 200 m/s
along with different hardness of abrasive materials impinges on the workpiece through a
nozzle while maintaining a distance between the nozzle (tool) as well as the work piece
called stand-off distance (SOD) so that the unwanted materials are removed due to the
kinetic energy of the abrasive particles gained by the high velocity of the water jet.
• This project/paper aims to increase the efficiency of AWJM by using two different
abrasives (such as Al2O3 and SiC) in different proportions. The effect (such as Surface
Finish, Kerf Taper, MRR) of the process on the workpiece material (such as Steels, Non-
ferrous alloys, Ti alloys, Ni- alloys, Polymers, Concrete, Granite, Wood) will be studied by
keeping the following parameters as constant; Abrasive mass flow rate, SOD, Gas
Pressure, Velocity of abrasive particles and varying the following parameters; Mixing
ratio, Abrasive grain size.

Important Observations
• Mandatory activities can be carried out simultaneously.
• Inadequate maintenance of material handling equipment causing mal-
functioning and wastage of time during material handling of dies.
• Certain offline activities can be done before hand in order to save time
• Excessive adjustment time for die, due to non-selection of appropriate bolster
plates in advance.
• Excessive adjusting time due to trial and error method adopted for adjusting shut
height.
• Employing water spider
• Wastage of time in finding the correct di
