RP : a social accent
RP stands not for “Real Posh”, but, rather for
Received Pronunciations.
the accent of the best educated and most
prestigious members of English society
RP was promoted by the BBC for decades.
RP is an accent used by less than 5 % of the British
populations.
Most well educated Scots, Irish, and Welsh do not
use RP, and there is more than one socially
prestigious accent in these countries.
RP now tends to be perceived by many people as
somewhat affected or ‘Real Posh’.
‘Estuary English’ and some have labeled it the new
‘RP’. Features of this modern urban dialect are
rapidly, spreading both regionally and socially and it
is a good illustration of the process of leveling.
Levelling involves the reduction of dialect and/or
accent variation has certainly reduced regional
variation in large area of the south of England
