SURAH AL-

BAQARAH
Verses: 1 to 7 ( 1st Ruqu)
INTRODUCTION
 It begins with the mention of those among its addressees who shall accept faith and those who
would reject it. A reference is then made to the mental perplexity and confusion of the latter
after the Quran had begunto be revealed. In this regard, the Bani Ismael have been warned that
this Book of Allah has revealed the truth in its ultimate form upon them. It would be extremely
unfortunate for them if they are still led astray by the mischievous machinations of the Jews
and thus deprive themselves of this great blessing---the Quran.
 The introduction ends on the tale of Satan's malicious rivalry and the khilaafat of man. This
tale is actually a mirror which reflects the whole scene which was created when the Prophet
(pbuh) had started disseminating the Message of Allah, and it clearly brings out the supporters
and the adverseries of the new religion.
VERSE # 1
‫ا ٓل ٓم‬

The names of letters of the Arabic alphabet, called huruf muqatta'at, occur at the beginning of
several surahs of the Qur'an. At the time of the Qur'anic revelation the use of such letters was a
well-known literary device, used by both poets and orators, and we find several instances in the
pre-Islamic Arabic literature that has come down to us.
VERSE # 2
ٰ
ُ َ‫َذ ِل َك ا ْل ِكت‬
َ ‫اب اَل َر ْي َب ۛ فِي ِه ۛ ُه ًدى لِّ ْل ُمتَّ ِق‬
 ‫ين‬

This is the Book of Allah, there is no doubt in it;2 it is a guidance for the pious
VERSE # 3
َ ُ‫صاَل ةَ َو ِم َّما َر َز ْقنَا ُه ْم يُنفِق‬
‫ون‬ َّ ‫ون ال‬ ِ ‫ون بِا ْل َغ ْي‬
َ ‫ب َويُقِي ُم‬ َ ‫الَّ ِذ‬
َ ُ‫ين يُ ْؤ ِمن‬

For those who believe in the existence of that which is beyond the reach of perception, 4 who
establish Prayer5 and spend out of what We have provided them
VERSE # 4
َ ُ‫ون بِ َما أُن ِز َل إِلَ ْيكَ َو َما أُن ِز َل ِمن قَ ْبلِكَ َوبِاآْل ِخ َر ِة ُه ْم يُوقِن‬
‫ون‬ َ ‫ َوالَّ ِذ‬ 
َ ُ‫ين يُ ْؤ ِمن‬

Who believe in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed before you,and have firm
faith in the Hereafter
VERSE # 5
َ ‫أُو ٰلَئِ َك َعلَىٰ ُه ًدى ِّمن َّربِّ ِه ْم ۖ َوأُو ٰلَئِكَ ُه ُم ا ْل ُم ْفلِ ُح‬
‫ون‬

Such are on true guidance from their Lord; such are the truly successful.
VERSE # 6
َ ُ‫س َوا ٌء َعلَ ْي ِه ْم أَأَن َذ ْرتَ ُه ْم أَ ْم لَ ْم تُن ِذ ْر ُه ْم اَل يُ ْؤ ِمن‬
‫ون‬ َ ‫ين َكفَ ُروا‬
َ ‫إِنَّ الَّ ِذ‬

As for those who have rejected (these truths),9 it is all the same whether or not you warn them,
for they will not believe.
VERSE # 7
 ‫ع ِظي ٌم‬ ٌ ‫َاوةٌ ۖ َولَ ُه ْم َع َذ‬
َ ‫اب‬ َ ‫س ْم ِع ِه ْم ۖ َو َعلَ ٰى أَ ْب‬
َ ‫صا ِر ِه ْم ِغش‬ َ ‫َختَ َم هَّللا ُ َعلَ ٰى قُلُوبِ ِه ْم َو َعلَ ٰى‬

Allah has sealed their hearts and their hearing, and a covering has fallen over their eyes. They
deserve severe chastisement.
