Overview:
1. What is computer?
2. Who invented the first computer?
3. Generations of computers.
What is computer?

 Computer is a programmable electronic device

 It takes some input and process it with some set
of instructions to produce the output
Who invented the First
Computer???
 Charles babbage(1791-
1871)(aged 79)
 He known as Father of
Computers
 First computer started
building in 1822
 It called as Difference
Engine
Charles Babbage (1791-1871)
The Father of Computers
Difference Engine
 The work of this
computer is to calculate
some set of numbers and
make a hard copy of if
 Because of funding
issues not get completed
Analytical Engine
 Charles Babbage started
building analytical engine
in 1837
 Arithmetic logic unit
 Basic flow control
 Punched cards
 And integrated memory
 Stopped because of
funding issues
The First Programmer
 Ada Lovelace(1815-
1852)(aged 36)
 Created the first
algorithm
 The first Programmer
Building of electrical computers
In 19th century
Vaccum tubes
Transistors
Registors
Capacitors
diods
Generations of Electric Computers
Electric computers are divided into 5 generations
1st generation of computers
2nd generation of computers
3rd generation of computers
4th generation of computers
5th generation of computers
First generation of computers
 In this Vacuum tubes are
used
 Weight of this computer
is around 30 tons
Vacuum Tube
 Used to control the flow
of electric current
Disadvantages of First generation of
computers
Second Generation of Computers
 Used transistors in the
place of vacuum tubes
Features
 Smaller size
 Fast and reliable
 Very costly
 Difficult to use
 Not for commercial use
Third Generation of Computers
 Used integrated circuits
 Smaller size
 Faster
 Costly
 Less maintenance
 Commercial use
 Less electricity
 Generates less heat, but ac
required
Fourth Generation of Computers
 Used Very Large Scale
Integration (VLSI)
 Very small size and
portable
 Very fast
 Very cheap
 Low Maintanance
 No ac required
Fifth Generation of
Computers( The Future )
 Used Ultra Large scale
Integration (ULSI)
 Very fast
 Very powerful
 Development of artificial
intelligence
Conclusion
 Now that the students have spent some time comprehending
the history of computers, they should have a better
understanding of how they came to be invented, why they were
invented and who some of the contributors that helped create
the computer were. Armed with this information the students
should feel confident that they are able to operate and
maneuver around a computer efficiently. Students have
navigated the Web to gather information on the development of
the computer. They have examined the trends in computers
from past to present and how they were and are presently being
used. Now, fundamentally they should be able to thrive in the
world of modern technology.
