What is Kashi Kari?

– Kashi is a term applied to enameled work on the Terracotta base .


– Kashi is a Persian word which means designating to the tiles or trimmed to the form of pieces of faience serving to cover entire .
– Or partial fabric of a building principally decorative purpose.
Technique of Kashi Kari

– A special technique is applied to prepare the blue color from a mixture of cobalt oxide and copper oxide.
– TECHNIQUE OF KASHI KARI
– The making of Kashi Kari starts from the special preparation of the tile followed by transferring of the design on the tile for further
works .
– It is a complicated process and involves many steps that need to be followed precisely .
– The making of a Kashi specimen goes through a series of 20 processes. Initially clay is formed from fine-grained soil.
History of Kashi Kari

– Originating from Iran, Kashi is one of the oldest handicrafts of Sindh .Kashi Kari is the centuries old mosaic art on the verge of
extinction
– In one of the most densely populated localities of Multan ,stands the SAWI MOSQUE, depicting an exquisite piece of mosaic art
called Kashi Kari. It was built by Nawab said Khan Qureshi, a noble of the courts of Mughal emperors Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb
Alamgir ,in Kotla Toley Khan. The Sawi Mosque is the oldest mosque in Multan and is being renovated currently.
– Kashi Kari-meaning mosaic art in Persian –is a form of decorative art that involves ceramic assortment on tiles ,faience and fabric.
Process of Kashi Kari

– Mehr Ghulam Muhammad ,an Archaeology Department sub divisional officer, says cobalt oxide(Green)and cobalt oxide(Blue) are
used in the making of Kashi Kari tiles.
– “Cobalt oxide is very expensive .Currently it costs Rs9,000 per kilogram .a one square foot kasha tile costs Rs600 to Rs700.”
– He says just a decade ago, these tiles were baked in wood fire kilns .This caused 50 per cent of them to break .Now, he says ,they are
baked using natural gas kilns so that the losses are reduced to less than one per cent .
Kashi Tiles

– A tile is a thin object usually square or rectangular in shape . Tile is a manufactured piece of hand-wearing material such as
ceramic ,stone ,metal ,baked clay or even glass, generally used for covering roofs, floors ,walls, or other objects such as tabletops.
