CSHS MUN Agenda and Info 9 - 28 - 2020
Model UN is an education simulation of the United Nations that engages students with international
relations and diplomacy.
Schools are assigned countries for their students to represent. Each student is a delegate, representing a
country in a specific committee.
Delegates must research their country and topics that are to be addressed at the simulated UN conference
in advance to understand what their position will be. Prior to conference, students craft a Position Paper
detailing their nation’s position and recommendation on each issue, which will help them take a stance
that reflects their country’s interests during conference debate and negotiation.
Students will then gather at Houston Area Model UN (HAMUN), debate with other nations on the assigned
topics, push for their agenda, and ultimately compromise.
During conference, the objective of each committee is to write and pass a resolution (or multiple) on the
assigned topics.
Thousands of middle school, high school, and college students across the country and around the world
participate in Model United Nations. It develops key skills that are necessary to succeed in an increasingly
globalized and interconnected world.

As a delegate at HAMUN, you are required to research, write, and submit a Position
Paper prior to the conference. Also called Policy Statements, these papers are
required at most conferences - both high school and collegiate - around the world. An
exceptional delegate will take these papers seriously as they are an opportunity to
practice your research, writing, and - ultimately at conference - speaking, skills. In
addition to practicing these skills, it will help you think about your country’s policies
more thoroughly.
Ideally, you should be familiar in various issues in your committee and others so you
can comfortably talk about your country’s view when asked.
All participating members must write 1 Position Paper on one of the two topics on
their committee's agenda.
To be eligible for awards, delegates must write 2 Position Papers, one for each topic
in their committee’s agenda.
NOTABLE PARTICIPANTS
NOTE – dates are subject to change – HAMUN has polled schools about possibly delaying the conference to March
in hopes that we would be more likely to be able to have it in person then instead of virtually
