Secondary Storage
• Secondary storage is often referred to as storage. Secondary storage is non-
volatile, which means it will not lose data when the systems power is turned off.

Devices
• Storage devices are used to store data or software that is used in a computer system.
• Storage devices can be either internal or external. Internal devices connect directly to the

• Solid State Drives (SSD): contains flash media. They are identical to hard disk drives
• Optical Disk Drives: contain optical disk media such as DVD and CD media
Media
• Hard disk are made up od many concentric platters. These platters spins
around on a central spindle. A read/ write head moves on an arm across tracks
on the platter. When reading a read / write head changes the magnetic field

• Typical spin speeds are 5400 revolutions per minute (rpm) or 7200 (rpm)
• The average seek time for a read/ write head is 4-15 milliseconds (ms).
Optical Media
• CDs: can store up to 700 MB of data. The data is written to the disk
• DVDs: can store 4.7 GB on a single side, double side 18 GB. Uses a
CD 700MB
