FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEM
• Fire is a reaction giving off heat, light, and
smoke;
• The three essential elements for a fire to
occur are: heat, fuel, and oxygen.
• These three elements form what is called the
fire triangle. Removing any one of these
components and a fire cannot occur, or
continue.

Fire Detectors
Heat and flame detectors; have three basic operating
principles:
•Fusion; melting of a metal rather like a normal electrical
fuse which operates a switch thus closing an electrical alarm
circuit.
•Expansion; a bimetallic strip is used which expands when
heated and makes contact with an open electrical circuit,
thus closing it and sounding an alarm.
Flame (heat) and smoke detectors; an infra-red beam is
transmitted across the protected area. The smoke and heat
interfere with the transmission of the beam; this is detected
by the receiving unit and the alarm is initiated.

Fire Protection of Buildings

There are four categories of fire protection

systems for buildings
• Portable extinguishers
• Fixed foam, carbon dioxide, and dry
powder extinguishers
• Fixed riser and hose-reel systems
• Sprinkler systems

L.N.J.P. HOSPITAL
CASE STUDY

6
WHY DO WE NEED FIRE SAFETY
SYSTEM HERE?
Since it is an hospital, Patient safety and
recovery must be the top priority of every
hospital. Hospital administrators also need to
protect their staff, other hospital employees,
and the visitors who enter the building.
Hospitals have potential fire hazards that set
them apart from other places when it comes to
fire protection.

7
WHY DO WE NEED FIRE SAFETY
SYSTEM HERE?
Hospitals need to have fire protection systems
that can detect and extinguish fires before they
get out of control, which allows for even more
time to conduct an evacuation.

SMOKE DETECTORS
A smoke detector will
sense smoke and sound
an alarm in the area where
there is smoke

SPRINKLERS
• Sprinkler head is the
component of a fire
sprinkler system that
discharges water when the
effects of a fire have been
detected.
• It has been installed
throughout the building.

MANUAL CALL POINTS FOR FIRE
DETECTION
• Manual call point which is
usually referred to as an
MCP is the point in a
building where a switch
used manually to activate
fire alarm, this requires
human intervention.
• It has been installed at
particular intervals.

FIRE HOSE REEL
Fire hose reel systems consist of
pumps, pipes, water supply
and hose reels located
strategically in a building,
ensuring proper coverage of
water to combat a fire. The
system is manually operated
and activated by opening a valve
enabling the water to flow into
the hose that is typically 30
meters away.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER
• A fire extinguisher is an
active fire protection device
used to extinguish or
control small fires, often in
emergency situations.
• They were available at
various points in the
building

BUILDING
Other than all these there were other fire
measures used as well such as..
•Fire exits
•Exhausts
•Fire alarms
•Refugee areas
•Proper signage
•etc
