TELIA
Telia Company is a Swedish-Finnish multinational telephone company and mobile network
operator present in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

The company has operations in other countries in Northern and Eastern Europe, and in Central
Asia and South Asia, with a total of 182.1 million mobile customers.
5G
5G is the fifth generation wireless technology for digital cellular networks that began wide deployment
in 2019. As with previous standards, the covered areas are divided into regions called "cells", serviced
by individual antennas. Virtually every major telecommunication service provider in the developed
world is deploying antennas or intends to deploy them soon. The frequency spectrum of 5G is divided
into millimetre waves, mid-band and low-band. Low-band uses a similar frequency range as the
predecessor, 4G.
CONCERNS/PROBLEMS

• Interference issues
• Health concerns
• Security concerns
PROBLEM
BACKGROUND/DIAGNOSIS
Interference issues
The spectrum used by various 5G proposals will be near that of passive remote sensing such as
by weather and Earth observation satellites, particularly for water vapor monitoring.
Interference will occur and will potentially be significant without effective controls. An
increase in interference already occurred with some other prior proximate band usages.
Interference to satellite operations impairs numerical weather prediction performance with
substantially deleterious economic and public safety impacts in areas such as commercial
aviation.
PROBLEM
BACKGROUND/DIAGNOSIS
Health concerns
In April 2019, the city of Brussels in Belgium blocked a 5G trial because of radiation laws. In
Geneva, Switzerland, a planned upgrade to 5G was stopped for the same reason. The Swiss
Telecommunications Association (ASUT) has said that studies have been unable to show that
5G frequencies have any health impact. Several Swiss cantons adopted moratoriums on 5G
technology on health grounds, though the Federal offices in charge of environment and
telecommunications say that the cantons have no jurisdiction to do so
PROBLEM
BACKGROUND/DIAGNOSIS
Surveillance concerns
A report published by the European Commission and European Agency for Cybersecurity
details the security issues surrounding 5G while notoriously trying to avoid mentioning
Huawei. The report warns against using a single supplier for a carrier's 5G infrastructure,
specially those based outside the European Union. (Nokia and Ericsson are the only European
manufacturers of 5G equipment.)
SOLUTIONS

• Research
• Experiments
• Correct use of media and understanding its impact
• Educating people on technological topics
FORMULATION OF RESEARCH
PURPOSE

Evaluate if company „Telia“ is ready to implement „5G“ and whether that would cause any
damage to the society.
PROBLEM/QUESTIONS
Questions:

Do you think 5G poses treats to society?

How can we protect our data and valuable info?
How quick is Telia to adapt the technology?
Do you think 5G is a positive shift?
Do you think that Lithuanian law ir ready for 5G?
THANK YOU!
