Richard the Lionheart was born in 1157 and became King of England in 1189 after overpowering his father Henry II. As king, he was determined to raise funds for the Third Crusade and took extreme measures to do so. During the Crusade, Richard conquered several cities but was unable to take Jerusalem. He earned Christians a three-year truce with Muslims before being captured on his return to England. Richard gained his nickname "The Lionheart" for his bravery in battle but was also known for his cruelty, including massacring Jews and Muslim prisoners. He died in 1199 while trying to strengthen his empire.

Second son of King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Parents separated. Became Duke of Aquitaine in 1172. Gaining the Crown Richard refused to give up land that belonged to him for any reason. At the age of 16 he was commanding his own army. His brother, Henry III, died in 1183. King Richard overpowered his father in 1188. His father died in 1189. Getting ready for the Crusade Richard was not interested in being king. Richard was determined to raise funds for the Crusades. He went to extreme measures to do it. He set out on the Third Crusade. The Third Crusade Conquers Cyprus,Acre,Jafa and Arsuf.
He was never able to take
the Holy City of Jerusalem.
He earned Christians a
three year truce with Muslims.
On his return trip to
England he was captured and given to Henry. Massacres He was very cruel to his enemies. When he was crowned King of England, he had a few Jews beaten. What followed was a massacre of Jews. After taking Acre Richard had 2700 Muslim prisoners,they were all killed. End of Reign On King Richard’s return he looked to strengthen his empire. He built Chateau Gaillard. Died on April 6th, 1199. He was buried at Fontevraud Abbey. Lasting legacy King Richard gained his nickname “The Lionheart” on the battlefield.
He did all he could to gain
more land for his empire.
He made sound decisions to
help his empire become stronger.
He was sung about by
troubadours for years to come.
