GOTHIC SUBCULTURE

Gothic subcultures can be defined as lovers of-

 Goth rock

Victorian and medieval history

Contemporary horror
cinematography
ORIGIN
• Gothic -cultures rose from the Post-Punk period.

• Gothic sub-culture evolved in England in the 1980s, in the aftermath of the decline
of the Punk culture

•Gothic culture is actually a movement with several aspects.

• It’s followers value the visual aesthetics and literature of earlier eras, while
celebrating music that emerged in a more recent time.
EVOLUTION
• As the subculture grew, members began to be
associated with a certain style of dress.

•For its original inspiration, Gothic style goes even

further back in time, to the Victorian and
Elizabethan eras.

•It added components of clothing, such as ruffled

high collars, open lacy sleeves, and stovepipe hats.

•Embraced the idea of dressing on the dark side,

seeing style as a balance of horror and
romanticism in life
FEATURES OF GOTHIC FASHION
• Gothic clothing borrows from Punk, Victorian
and Renaissance dressing styles and mixes
them with the contemporary clothing styles.

• Use of dark colours, especially black is

characteristic of Gothic sub-culture and fashion.

• European men and women dye their hair

black, use black nail polish and lipstick and wear
dark or black clothes.

• Mostly colours such as black, grey, brown,

deep blue are used.
TYPES OF GOTH

1. DeathRocker
Death rockers are a type of people who evolved in between
the Punk and Goth subcultures.

2. Steampunk

• Steampunks are trying to pretend that whilst technology

has progressed, aesthetics and morality have remained
unchanged.
3. Trad Goth
•Goth which was created when the gothic music scene was born.
•Informal kinds of dress like black T-shirts with band logos, leather jackets, pointy
boots and high heels, chains were involved

4.Victorian Goth

•Elegance and romantism best describe this kind of Goth

•. Big and elegant dresses, corsets, long gloves, hats, cravats,
jewellery with large stones are enough to be elegant and
delicate.
5. Vampire Goth

• Vampire Goths are so much influenced by

the horror literature and films.

•Mainly black and dark red shades of

velvets were especially used in making
elegant and luxurious cloths.

6. Romantic Goth

• Romantic Goths is a subculture that

has to do more with philosophical
issues than with the external
appearance
7. Medieval Goth

• Medieval Goths have been inspired from the Medieval

time period.
• Many of them have an affinity for witches, too, and
they try to investigate witchcraft's origin and past.

8. Cabaret Goth

• Corsets, accessories with feathers, garters and high

heels used to create an erotic atmosphere
•The make-up was also attractive -the white skin was
always decorated with a dark red lipstick and a cat's eye
eyeliner.
9. Cyber Goth
• Protruding usage of bright colours in addition to the
traditional black of Gothic fashion.

10. Hippy Goth

• The difference lies in this type's more morbid, dark splash on

regular hippy lifestyle and fashion.

• Makeup has no set style, but in general, an eyeliner style like cat's
eye with bolder lips tends to work fairly well.
