– Piston Engine
– Turbo props
– Jets
• Runway specifications
• Impact of weather on performance
Quiz next week (Session 7/8/9 &10)

2
AIRCRAFT ENGINES

• Piston Engine

• Turbo props

• Jets
3
ENGINE TYPES
PISTON ENGINE

• It is a reciprocating engines.

• Use High Octane (AVG-100 LL) fuel

• Mostly used in small aircraft.

• Used in training and slow speed aircraft

6
ENGINE TYPES
Turbo Prop

• Turbine Engine

• Propeller attached through shaft.

• Uses Jet A-1 fuel

• Aircraft flies faster then piston aircraft

• Utilized in commuter service

Turbo Prop Engine

8
Turbo Prop Aircarft

9
Jet Engines
• Used on airliners and military fighter
aircraft
• Very high speeds achievable
• Can operate at high altitudes
• Operates on Jet A-1 fuel
• Simpler in design as compared to turbo
props engine 10

Jet Airliners / Business Jets

13
Runway

It is defined as a rectangular area on a

land prepared for aircraft to landing
and takeoff.

14
Runway

15
RUNWAY PERFORMANCE
• Runway performance is different for every
aircraft
• Will determine runway length requirements
• Dependent upon:
– Aircraft Weight
– Landing gear
– Fuel capacity (weight)
– Aircraft performance under certain weather
conditions
PERFORMANCE:
ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS

• Temperature, air
pressure, and wind
speed can affect how
an aircraft will perform
• Runway length, aircraft
noise, energy
consumption, and
flight distances are
dependent upon the
atmospheric conditions
