What is an effective leader?
“Leadership is not a person or a position. It is a complex moral relationship
between people, based on trust, obligation, commitment, emotion, and a
shared vision of the good.” Ciulla (1998).

Effective leadership is a highly subjective discussion…

• Power
• Goal
• Responsibility
• Followers
• Situation
Why do leaders appear to fail in their effectiveness?
Poor ethical decisions in business are attributed to a variety of reasons
(Trevino & Brown, 2004).
– Organisational Culture (Del Baldo, 2010).
– Pressure (Fisher, 2004).
– Complication of Issue (Robinson & Dowson, 2012).
– Reward and Sanctions (Flannery & May, 2000).
– Misguided Loyalty (Hinrich, 2007).
– Cultural Awareness (Vitell et al, 1993).
– Self Interest (Turiel, 1983).
– Personality Characteristics (Arlow, 1991).
– Values (Wang & Murnighan, 2014).
– Ethical Maturity (Kohlberg, 1968).
– Apathy (Marin, 1993).
Final Thoughts

“The negative results of problems will grow if they are ignored.

You can avoid reality but you cannot avoid the consequences of
avoiding reality” (Ayn Rand, 1964).
