Cable Trenches

 Cables are grouped according to their voltage level.

 It is preferred to lay MV and LV cables in separate trenches
 MV and LV cables can run in the same trench but they should be
separated by a row of bricks and minimum distance of 40cm.
 Control cables and 400V power cables may run in the same trench.

Cable Trenches

Cables may be grouped in vertical layers if trench width is limited.

The vertical spacing between layers is 150 mm.
The vertical spacing between layers is filled with clean sand in order to
give good cooling for the cables

Cable Trenches

Direct Buried Cable Trenches

It is usually used in unpaved areas.

Cable trenches are covered with plastic mesh as a caution sign.

Another layer of bricks may be added above the trench to provide

mechanical protection for the cables.

Cable Trenches

Concrete Cable Trenches

It is usually used in paved areas where vehicles are usually run.

Concrete trenches has a concrete cover which perform the following

functions:

– Protection for the cables

– It is removed when we want to add new cables in the same

trench or to replace existing cables.

Cable Trays

Solid Bottom
Type:
It provides reliable cable support in corrosive applications. The tray and
all accessories should be made of corrosive resistant elements.

Cable Trays

Why ladder type is used for power cables?

 Power cables develop amount of heat during normal operating

conditions.

 higher ventilation is required to compensate the heat dissipation.

 Ladder type provides better cooling for the cables therefore they
are more recommended for power cables.

Cable Trays
Material of Cable Trays:

 Steel.
– Pre-Galvanized steel (usually used in dry interiors).
– Hot Dip Galvanized steel (usually used in outdoors in non
aggressive environment).
– Stainless Steel (usually used in aggressive environment).
 Aluminum.
 Fiber reinforced Plastic.

Material of Cable Trays:

Use of any of the previous materials depends on the installation

environment.
It depend also on the project specification.
Material engineer should give his recommendation for the most
suitable material.
Cost should be considered also in selecting the tray material.
