What You
Learned Before!
SUBTRACTION OF INTEGERS
To subtract Integers
 Keep
 Keep the 1st number
 Change
 Subtraction sign to Addition
 Opposite
 Write down the opposite of the 2nd number

 Then add the way you normally do.

Multiplying and Dividing
Integers
Something to
Here are some other ways that
multiplying integers might appear:
Multiplying with a raised dot or using
parenthesis:

−𝟐 𝟔 𝟖(−𝟑)

(−𝟓)(−𝟏𝟏)
Here are some other ways that dividing
integers might appear:

Dividing with a fraction bar:

→
→ −𝟗 ÷(− 𝟑)

Positive * Positive
 When we multiply or divide two integers, the
sign rules are different than when we add or
subtract signed numbers.
 When we multiply or divide two positive
integers, the solution is positive.

7 • 6 = 42 12 ÷ 3 = 4
2 • 9 = 18 16 ÷ 8 = 2
20 • 1 = 20 8÷8=1
Negative * Negative
 When we multiply or divide two negative
integers, the solution is also positive.

(-7) • (-6) = 42 (-12) ÷ (-3) = 4

(-2) • (-9) = 18 (-16) ÷ (-8) = 2
(-20) • (-1) = 20 (-8) ÷ (-8) = 1
Positive * Negative
 When we multiply or divide one positive & one
negative integer, the solution is always
negative, regardless of which is larger or which
is written first.

(-7) • 6 = - 42 12 ÷ (-3) = - 4
2 • (-9) = -18 (-16) ÷ 8 = -2
20 • (-1) = -20 (-8) ÷ 8 = -1
Summary
Adding Integers:
Positive + Positive = Positive
Negative + Negative = Negative
Positive + Negative = Sign of Larger #
Subtracting Integers:
Keep - Change - Change
Multiplying/Dividing Integers:
Positive + Positive = Positive
Negative + Negative = Positive
Positive + Negative = Negative
Something to keep in Mind
MULTIPLYING INTEGERS
An expression with an even number of
negative integers will always produce
a positive answer.

An expression with an odd number of

negative integers will always produce
a negative answer.
Example :

−𝟐 × ( − 𝟑 ) × 𝟒 × ( −𝟐 )=¿ − 𝟒𝟖

Since there are 3 negative integers (an

odd amount), the answer will be
negative.
Then, multiply from left to
right to find the product.
Dividing Integers
An expression with an even number of
negative integers will always produce
a positive answer.

An expression with an odd number of

negative integers will always produce
a negative answer.

Let’s take a look at a few

examples!
More than 2 Integers
Example 2:
−𝟑𝟐 ÷ 𝟐÷ 𝟒 ÷ ( − 𝟐 )=¿ 𝟐

2 negative integers (an even

amount) result in a positive
quotient.
Divide from left to right to
simplify.
Practice Problems

1. -50 ÷ -5 = 10 6. 7 × -6 = -42

2. -9 × 4 = -36 7. -48 ÷ -8 = 6

3. 60 ÷ -12 = -5 8. -11 × 6 = -66

4. -8 × -7 = 56 9. 72 ÷ -9 = -8

5. -100 ÷ 10 = -10 10. -15 × -2 = 30

You Try It!
Multiply or divide.

1. (-10)•3 2. (-4)•(-3)
3. 7•(-2) 4. 5•(-2)
5. (-18)÷(-3) 6. (-20)÷2

Simplify each expression.

7. (3)(-5x) 8. (-2)(-3y)
9. (-1)(7x) 10. (10)(-5c)
Solutions

1. (-10)•3 = -30
2. (-4)•(-3) = 12
= -14
3. 7•(-2)
= -10
4. 5•(-2)
=6
5. (-18)÷(-3)
= -10
6. (-20)÷2
Solutions

7. (3)(-5x) = -15x
8. (-2)(-3y) = 6y
= -7x
9. (-1)(7x)
= -50c
10. (10)(-5c)
