CHANGES IN

MATTER IN THE
PRESENCE OR
ABSENCE OF
OXYGEN
 The presence and absence
of oxygen has various
effects on matter. Among
these common ones that
you readily see are
combustion and rusting.
Fire Triangle
RUSTING
 Caused by the reaction of iron
with oxygen present in the air.
This kind of reaction is slower
than the rate of combustion. The
amount of rust formed in an iron
depends on moisture and
humidity of the surroundings.
WAYS TO PREVENT RUSTING

 Apply paint on the

material
 Always wipe the
material with a clean
dry cloth after use.
 The change in color of the
inner fleshy part of the
apple is due to its exposure
to oxygen.
 A certain fish pond owner
reported that there has been a fish
kill in a pond that he owns. The
fisheries bureau investigated the
incident, only to find out that the
fish pond was overly populated.
What do you think is the
connection of the overpopulation
of the fish pond to the fish kill that
occurred?
 1. It is caused by the reaction
of iron with oxygen present
in the air
 2-4. What are the three
elements needed for a fire to
occur?
 5. It is an ability of a material
to burn.
 6-7. What are the two factors
that influence the formation
of rust?
 8. Where can we find
oxygen?
 9. What gives oxygen?
 10.
