Important Terms

Organization
• A group of people who unite to work together
on certain goals

Example: family, corporate or business office,


etc.
Society
• A group of people who share more or less
similar norms, values, and culture

Example: Filipinos, Ilonggos, Japanese


State
• A group of people living in a definite and
permanent territory having its own form of
government characterized by its sovereignty

Example: Philippines, United States, Brazil


Nation
• Similar with the concept of the state but lacks
at least one of the elements mentioned

Example: Filipinos, Ilonggos, Japanese


Intra-governmental Organizations
• Organizations ‘within’ the government
• Can also be inter-agency offices

Example: Government of Sao Paolo, Provincial


Government of South Cotabato, Inter-Agency
Task Force against Human Trafficking, etc.
Inter-governmental Organizations
• Organizations constituted by members from
different states who work on a certain
purpose

Example: United Nations, NATO, OPEC, etc.


Governmental Organizations
• Basically refers to national governments

Example: Gov’t of the Philippines, Gov’t of


Liechtenstein, Gov’t of Andorra
Non-Governmental Organizations
• Advocacy groups that seek to pursue political
agenda

Example: Geenpeace International, World


Wildlife Fund, Save the Children, etc.

International Organizations
• Organizations made up by members coming
from different countries
• Basic typology of worldwide organizations

Example: UN, Save the Children, Jollibee Inc.,


etc.
Global Organizations
• Organizations constituting members in many
countries and in almost every continent
• Distinguished from ‘international
organizations’ in its criteria to have members
in at least every continent

Example: Carnegie Mellon University, Microsoft,


Intel, etc.
In terms of Management and
Supervision
Transnational Organizations
• Organizations that branch out to different
countries but are managed by one central
office
• International NGOs belong to this category

Example: Save the Children, Greenpeace


International, World Wildlife Fund, Amnesty
International, Intel, Adobe, Microsoft
Multinational Organizations
• Organizations that are present in multiple
countries but each office has its own
administrative system
• Member organizations have the capacity
modify the design and development strategies
that fit the needs of a particular context

Example: McDonalds, Jollibee Inc., Dole Inc., etc.


Supranational organizations
• Organizations whose pronouncements are
executory for member governments
• Highest form in worldwide organizational
typology

Example: United Nations, NATO, European
