FUEL GAS PIPING

Prepared by: Stephen Carl C. Tabiar

FUEL GAS PIPING SYSTEMS

• are systems which are

used to convey fuel gas
used for heating and
lighting purposes.
FUEL GAS
PIPING
SYSTEMS
FUEL GAS
PIPING
SYSTEMS
• APPLIANCE FUEL CONNECTOR
- assembly of listed semi-rigid or flexible tubing
and fittings to carry fuel between a fuel-piping
outlet and a fuel-burning appliance.
• FUEL GAS
PARTS OF - natural, manufactured, liquefied petroleum, or
a mixture of these.
FUEL GAS • GAS PIPING

PIPING - any installation of pipe, valves, or fittings that is

used to convey fuel gas, installed on any premises or
SYSTEMS in any building.
• GAS PIPING SYSTEM
- any arrangement of gas piping supplied by one
(1) meter, and each arrangement of gas piping
serving a building, structure, or premises, whether
individually metered or not.
• LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS (LPG) FACILITIES
- tanks, containers , container valves, regulating
equipment, meters and/or appurtenances for the
storage and supply of liquefied petroleum gas for
any building, structure, or premises.
PARTS OF • PROVISION FOR LOCATION OF POINT OF
DELIVERY
FUEL GAS - location of the point of delivery shall be

PIPING acceptable to the serving gas supplier.

• QUICK DISCONNECT DEVICE
SYSTEMS - hand operated device that provides a means for
connecting and disconnecting an appliance or an
appliance connector to a gas supply and that is
equipped with an automatic means to shut off the
gas supply when the device is disconnected
• SERVICE PIPING
- the piping and equipment between the street gas
main and the gas piping system inlet that is
installed by, and is under the control and

PARTS OF maintenance of the serving gas supplier.

• TRANSITION GAS RISER
FUEL GAS - any listed or approved section or sections of pipe
and fittings used to convey fuel gas and installed
PIPING in a gas piping system for the purpose of providing
a transition from below ground to above ground.
SYSTEMS • EARTHQUAKE ACTUATED GAS SHUTOFF VALVE
- a valve to be installed in a gas piping system
designed to automatically shut off the gas when a
seismic disturbance is detected.

Inspection

After gas piping installation, alteration or repair, authorities

shall inspect the gas piping system

Gas piping system excavations should be left open unless it has

been inspected and approved.
Test Gauges

For pressure exceeding

For 69 Kpa but less
Specific test gauges For 69 Kpa, use gauges 689 Kpa, gauges should
that 689 Kpa, use
are used in gas piping with 0.7 Kpa increment have an increment of
gauges with 6.9 Kpa
inspections: or less 2% of the working
increment or less
pressure specified
Gas Pipe Sizing

• Gas piping systems shall be sized

properly to be able to provide
sufficient amount of gas to meet
maximum demand without
pressure losses between point of
delivery to the desired
equipment.
• Sizes shall be in accordance with
NFPA 54: 5.4.3
• Pressure drop allowable
maintained should be when the
supply pressure is greater than
minimum pressure for equipment
to run
Piping Materials

• Materials for piping of

gas systems shall
comply with the
standards set by the
NFPA 54: 5.6.1.1
• Most common pipes
used for gas systems
are steel and wrought
iron Schedule 40
pipes.
Gas Meters

• Gas meters shall be located in

ventilated spaces readily accessible for
examination, reading, replacement or
necessary maintenance.(NFPA 54:
5.7.2.1)
• Gas meters shall not be placed to
locations where they will be subjected
to damage. (NFPA 54: 5.7.2.2)
• Gas meters shall be located at least 3 ft
from source of ignition (NFPA
54:5.7.2.3)
Gas Pressure Regulators

• Gas pressure regulators reduce

input pressure of gas to its desired
output
• A gas regulator shall be installed
where the gas should be placed
where the pressure is higher than
the branch supply line. (NFPA
54.8.1)
Venting

• Vent shall be
designed to prevent
entry of water,
insects or other
foreign materials
that could cause
blockage.
Backpressure Protection

• Protective devices shall include but are not limited

to ( NFPA 54:5.10.2):
• Check valves
• Three way valves
• Reverse flow indicators controlling positive shutoff
valves
• Normally closed air actuated positive shutoff
regulators
Underground Piping

• Underground gas piping shall

be installed with sufficient
clearance from any other
underground structure to
avoid contact therewith to
allow maintenance and to
protect against damage from
proximity to other
structures. ( NFPA 54: 7.1.1)
