LITERACY - stems from the word “Literate” which first appeared in
15th century and is derived from the latin word “literatus” meaning
‘a person that is distinguished or identified by letters. It is carried
with the idea that a person is cultured and educated.

Conventional Concept

1.BASIC LITERACY – ability to

spoken sounds in order to

2. COMPREHENSION LITERACY - ability to understand the
meaning of what is being read.

3. FUNCTIONAL OR PRACTICAL LITERACY - ability to read (i.e.


decode and comprehend) written materials needed to perform
everyday vocational tasks. understand the meaning of what is
being read.

anywhere, in real time by having new skills and attitudes of
interacting.

2. SOCIAL & FINANCIAL LITERACY – ability to navigate social


networks, online & off-line and addressing personal finances to
alleviate the gap between rich and poor.

3. MEDIA / CYBER LITERACY– locate, verify, manage online


information.
