Project Characteristics

Project analysis slide 8

CHANGE
• A project must deliver a change in the society
• It has an impact on the people delivering
• It impacts the people and organization that is
being delivered to

Mission Focused
• A single definable purpose, end-item or
result. This is usually specified in terms of
cost, schedule and performance
requirements.
Project Characteristics

Project analysis slide 8

Temporary
• Projects are temporary activities.
• This goal is within a specific time-frame. Once
the goal is achieved, the organization created
for it is disbanded or sometimes it is
reconstituted to begin work on a new goal

Integrating
• A project requires interlinking of activities.
• It requires knowledge and resources to be
brought together in a process to get the
most out of it.
Project Characteristics

Project analysis slide 8

Social Construction
• A project doesn’t behave like a machine.
• It has people and organizations involved and
they have a social relation between them

Emergency and Uncertainty

• The requirements of a project may not be
known in advance.
• The project manager has to deal with
uncertainty

Aspects of Uniqueness
• Every project is unique and hasn’t been done
before
• Even in what are often called “routine”
projects such as home construction, the
variables such as terrain, access, zoning laws,
labor market, public services and local utilities
make each project different. A project is a
one-time, once-off activity, never to be
repeated exactly the same way again.
