DEVELOPING

COMPOSING
SKILLS
WHAT IS DEVELOPING COMPOSING
SKILLS?
It focuses the students on narrating, describing, analyzing,
comparing, and contrasting, classifying, and evaluating at
the paragraph level and offers a complete introduction that
bridges the gap between the paragraph and the essay level.
STAGES OF WRITING
DEVELOPMENT
1. PRELITERATE:
DRAWING
- Uses of drawing to stand for
writing.
- Believes that drawing/
writing is communication of
a purposeful message.
- Read their drawings as if
there were writing
– on them.

2. PRELITERATE:
SCRIBBLING
-scribbles but intends it as
writing
-scribbling resembles writing
-holds and uses pencil like an
adult. –

3. EARLY EMERGENT: LETTER-
LIKE FORMS
-shapes in writing actually resemble
letters.
-shapes are not actually letters
-look like poorly formed letters, but are
unique creations. –

4. EMERGENT: RANDOM
LETTERS OR LETTER STRINGS
-uses letter sequences perhaps learned
from his/her name.
- may write the same letters in many
ways.
-long strings of letters
– in random order.

5. TRANSITIONAL: WRITING VIA
INVENTED SPELLING
-creates own spelling when conventional spelling is
not known.
-one letter may represent an entire syllable
-words may overlay

-may not use proper spacing
-as writing matures, more words are spelled
conventionally

6. FLUENCY: CONVENTIONAL SPELLING
-usually resembles adult writing

THE ADVANTAGES OF INVENTED SPELLING:
● It builds a sense of confidence, pride, and control over the learning process.
● It allows students to express themselves creatively through writing without
worrying about the spelling of unfamiliar words.
● Writing using invented spelling techniques allows for the extensive practice of
phonics because students are using letters to represent the sounds they hear.
● Teachers can discover important information about a student's growing
knowledge of phonemes by reading a composition using invented spelling
techniques.
THE DISADVANTAGES OF INVENTED
SPELLING:
● It may reduce the incentive for children to learn to spell words correctly.
● It could possibly lead to problems in communication since there's no
guarantee others will be able to decipher what the student has written.
● Highly logical children may become frustrated when the teacher doesn't
insist there's only one correct way to spell a particular word.
