FAMILY
The family of Jose P. Rizal
Francisco mercado (1818-1898)

✣ Father of Jose Rizal who was the youngest of 13


offsprings of Juan and Cirila Mercado.
✣ Born in Biñan, Laguna on April 18, 1818; studied in
San Jose College, Manila; and died in Manila.

TEODORA ALONSO (1826-1913)
✣ Mother of Jose Rizal who was the second child of
Lorenzo Alonso and Brijida de Quintos.
✣ She studied at the Colegio de Santa Rosa.
✣ She was a business-minded woman, courteous,
religious, hard-working and well-read. She was born in
Santa Cruz, Manila on November 8, 1826 and died in
1913 in Manila.

1660s and changed his name to Mercado in 1697.
He married late in life.

✣ After graduating, he continued his education at UST
✣ He finished a year in Philosophy and Letters and decided to shift
to medical course
✣ Remained loyal to Ateneo participated in extracurricular
activities in Ateneo and completed a course in surveying.
✣ Rizal pursue his studies in medicine in school term
✣ Rizal received his four years practical training in medicine at the
Hospital de San Juan de Dios in Intramuros

Academic Journey To Spain (1882-1885)

✣ His departure for Spain was kept secret from Spanish Authorities,
friars and even his parents especially his mother because she would
not allow him to go
✣ On November 3, 1882, he enrolled in Universidad Central de
Madrid taking up two courses: Philosophy and Letters and
Medicine
✣ On June 21, 1884, he conferred the degree of Licentiate in
Medicine

Opthalmology studies and travels in
Europe

✣ Jose Rizal went to Paris and Germany in order to


specialize in ophthalmology to cure his mother’s
failing eyesight.
✣ In 1885, after studying at the Universidad
Central de Madrid, Rizal went to Paris to acquire
more knowledge in ophthalmology

✣ Rizal lived in Berlin, famous capital of unified Germany


for five reasons:
⨳ to gain further knowledge of ophthalmology
⨳ to further his studies of sciences and languages
⨳ to observe the economic and political conditions of the
German nation
⨳ to associate with famous German scientists and scholars
⨳ to publish his novel, Noli Me Tangere

✣ The prices of food, drinks, theatre, tickets, laundry, hotel


accommodations, and transportation were too high for Rizal’s
slender purse so that he commented in a letter to his family: “Paris is
the costliest capital in Europe.”
✣ March 1883- Rizal joined the Masonic lodge called Acacia in
Madrid. Rizal’s reason for becoming a mason was to secure
Freemansory’s aid in his fight against the friars in the Philippines.

✣ To complete his studies and widen his political knowledge through exposure
to European government.
✣ Rizal’s departure for Spain was kept secret to avoid detection by the Spanish
authorities and the friars. Jose Mercado- Rizal used this name; a cousin from
Biñan
✣ February 15, 1889- Graciano Lopez Jaena founded the patriotic newspaper
called La Solidaridad in Barcelona. Los Agricultores Filipinos (The Filipino
Farmers)- Rizal’s first article which appeared in La Solidaridad which is
published on March 25, 1889, six days after he left London for Paris

✣ Rizal enrolled in the Universidad Central de Madrid


(Central University of Madrid) in two courses—
Medicine and Philosophy and Letters.
✣ Rizal studied painting and sculpture at Academy of Fine
Arts of San Fernando.

✣ Rizal lived in London from May, 1888 to March, 1889 for


three reasons:
⨳ to improve his knowledge of the English language
⨳ to study and annotate Morga’s Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas,
a rare copy of which he heard to be available in the British
Museum
⨳ London was a safe place for him to carry on his fight against
Spanish tyranny

Hong-kong

✣ Hounded by powerful enemies, Rizal was forced to leave his


country for a second time in February 1888.
✣ Rizal left Europe for Hong Kong, where he lived from
November, 1891 to June, 1892. His reasons for leaving Europe
were
⨳ life was unbearable in Europe because of his political differences
with M.H. del Pilar and other Filipinos in Spain
⨳ to be near his idolized Philippines and family

✣ This is the work of Rizal when he was 8 years


old, his message here is that we should love our
own language.

Noli me tangere

✣ A novel written by our national hero Jose Rizal. The


title "Noli Me Tangere" translates to "Huwag Mo Akong
Salingin" in Filipino which means "Touch Me Not”. The
novel is a reflection of what the Filipinos were going
through during that time.

El Filibusterismo

✣ A novel written by our nation hero, the title means


“The Reign of the Greed” it is the second novel written
by our Jose Rizal. Rizal portrayed a filibuster or rebel
who is himself to reveal the moral cancer of Spanish
officials in the Philippines.

Before execution
LA LIGA FILIPINA

✣ Upon his return to the Philippines in


July, 1892, Rizal organized the La
Liga Filipina.
✣ Rizal explained the objectives of the
Liga Filipina, a civic league of
Filipinos, which he desired to establish
and its role in the socio-economic life
of the people.

✣ The La Liga Filipina was the organization founded by Jose Rizal
Ilaya Street, Tondo on 3 July 1892, during the emerging militant
nationalism in Filipino society. The organization aims to do the
following:
⨳ Unity of the whole Philippines,
⨳ Promoting reforms,
⨳ Providing support for education, agriculture, and commerce,
⨳ Combating any form of violence and unjust practices, and
⨳ providing protection and assistance of each member to each other.

✣ Rizal was still exiled to Dapitan, on the island of Mindanao.
✣ During the four years Rizal was in exile, he practiced medicine and
took on students.
✣ In 1896 the Katipunan, a Filipino nationalist secret society, revolted
against Spain. He was arrested for sedition despite of being not
affiliated with the said society.
✣ Found guilty, he was publicly executed by a firing squad in Manila.
