• Health is defined as a state of complete
physical, mental and social well being and just
not the non existence of disease or ailment.
Health is a primary human right and has been
accorded due importance by the Constitution
• Article 21 stresses upon state governments to
safeguard the health and nutritional well being
of the people, the central government also
plays an active role in the sector.

Healthcare sector in India
• A growing healthcare sector
• Healthcare is one of India’s largest sectors, in terms of
revenue and employment, and the sector is expanding
rapidly.
• During the 1990s, Indian healthcare grew at a compound
annual rate of 16%.
• Today the total value of the sector is more than $34 billion.
• This translates to roughly 6% of GDP. By 2012, India’s
healthcare sector is projected to grow to nearly $40 billion
and by 2020 it will be around US $280 billion.
• The private sector accounts for more than 80% of total
healthcare spending in India.
