PENDIMETHALIN MODE
OF ACTION IN RICE

-S.SAILAKSHMI
I.D. NO.2017030041
DESCRIPTION OF THE CHEMICAL
• Generic Name : N-(1- ethyl propyl )- 3,4dimethyl -
2,6 – dinitrobenzamine.
• Common Name : Pendimethalin
• Trade Names : Prowl, Herbadox, Stomp, AC 92553
• Year of initial registration : 1974
• Pesticide Type : Herbicide
• Chemical Family : Dinitroalinine
USE PATTERNS AND FORMULATIONS

• Application sites : Registered for control of broad leaf weeds

and grassy weed species.
• Types of formulations : Is available in granular, dispersible
granular and emulsifiable concentrate formulations.
• Method of application : Applied as pre emergence spray, early
post emergence and late post emergence culti-spray
applications.
• Application rates : 0.5-2.0 lbs
• Usual carriers : Attapulgite clay and water
CHARACTERISTICS
• Non-dietary exposure to pendimethalin by a farmer as
an applicator during mixing, loading, spraying and
flagging as probable.
• Absorbed in limited amounts by monocotyledonous
plants.
• It inhibits plant cell division and cell elongation.
• Tolerance capacity for rice – 0.05 ppm.
MODE OF ACTION

• It inhibits both root and shoot growth.

• It controls the weed population and prevents
the weeds from emerging, particularly during
the crucial development phase of the crop.
• Its primary mode of action is to prevent cell
division and elongation in susceptible species.
• According to the mode of action it is listed in
group K1
RESULTS OF FIELD EXPERIMENT

• Based on field experiment conducted during Kharif 2012 at

CCS HAU, in direct rice
• Pendimethalin 1000g/ha fb bispyribacsodium 25g/ha and
metsulfuron methyl + Chlorimuron ethyl RM 4g/ha application
resulted in :
• Highest weed control efficiency – 75.4%
• Lowest weed index – 3.69%
• More number of effective tillers – 209.3
• Filled grains per panicle – 83.7
• Highest B:C – 2.37
• Higher grain yield – 3.97t/ha
• Herbicide resistance typically increases production costs
and limits options for herbicide selection, cultivations and
rotations.
• It is not cross-resistant with other grass weed herbicides.
• It supports the effects of other supplementary grass weed
herbicides that use a different mode of action.
