CHALLENGES FACED BEFORE THE STARTING OF CONSTUCTION
•Site was little more than 5000 sq.m which was quite tight between
the buildings
•There was hospital on one side and the London bridge station on
the other side and an underground tunnel around of Shard which
made it more difficult for the demolition of the old building.
•The old building had to be destroyed in order to begin the
construction of the Shard but the problem was the location of the
building
•It was impossible to blow off the old building for demolishing as it
was in between crowded place and the because of the hospital
located there
•Demolishing began in the year 2008 and about 25000 tons of
concrete and glass was taken down
•It was all done floor by floor and piece by piece
•Removing of these steels and concrete in this huge amount
destabilizes the soil below which is also a threat for building
around 80m radius of the site
•stability of those nearby buildings could be effected
•In order to keep an eye on the nearby building engineers build
special movement sensors on nearby buildings and those
buildings were being monitored by the engineers
EQUIPMENTS USED IN TRANSFER OF MATERIALS FROM GROUND TO DIFFERENT
FLOORS
•The basement and the building was being
constructed simultaneously
•External free standing cranes were being
used in the construction
•Inside the black box above the core they
installed a crane in the lift shaft
•The crane was seating on the special
cradle which was connected with hydraulic
jack by steel ropes
•As the core is built the hydraulic jack push
upward which moves the crane up with it.
•That crane helps in transferring the
materials to the upper levels
