Measures of Central Tendency: Mean, Median, Mode
Measures of Central Tendency: Mean, Median, Mode
MEAN
To calculate the mean, we first have to calculate the sum of the data set then divide by the amount
of numbers in the dataset.
Example:
To find the mean of the following data set: (56, 35, 45, 67, 12, 24, 48, 55, 58, 30)
The Mean = 43
MEDIAN
HOW TO CALCULATE THE MEDIAN?
When the dataset has an odd number of values, arrange the values in
ascending order and get the middle most value.
Median Odd
23, 21, 18, 16, 15, 13, 12, 10, 9, 7, 6, 5, 2
Notice that the number 12 has six values on the side and six values on the left.
Therefore, 12 is the median of this dataset.
MODE
To determine the mode of a dataset, get the value that occurs the most in the set.
5, 5, 5, 4, 4, 3, 2, 2, 1
In the dataset shown above, the number 5 occurs most frequently, which makes it the mode.
