EFFECTS OF BODY

CHANGES IN MALE
AND FEMALE
ADOLESCENTS
By: Espariz, Rosy Mer C.

Palmes, Angelica B.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the discussion, students will be
able to:

 Describe normal body changes in adolescents

 Assess an adolescent for the normal body changes
 Use critical thinking in giving recommendations to
the adolescents
OUTLINE:

1.1 Growth Spurt
1.2 Internal Structure
1.3 Apocrine Sweat Glands
1.4 Body Image
1.5 Voice Changes

3.Recommendations
GROWTH SPURT

rapid and intense increase in the rate of growth in height and

weight that occurs during the adolescent stage
EFFECTS
•increase in body size does not occur in all organ systems
at the same rate.

•these differences in growth rates make adolescents

appear long-legged and awkward during a rapid growth
spurt because their extremities elongate first, followed
by trunk growth. Both sexes may lack coordination during
these times.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Adolescents are usually their own worst critics, never
pleased with any aspect of their bodies. Those with low
self-esteem may need parental or health care provider
support to understand that a person’s worth is based on
more than physical appearance.

They may need help to realize the characteristics that

make someone creative, compassionate, and fun to be with
are the qualities on which lasting relationships are built.
INTERNAL
STRUCTURE
EFFECTS
• Heart and lungs increase in size more slowly than the rest of the
body, blood flow and oxygen availability are reduced. This means
adolescents may have insufficient energy and become fatigued trying
to finish the various activities that interest them.

• Pulse rate (70 bpm) and respiratory rate (20 cpm) decrease
slightly, and blood pressure increases slightly (120/70 mmHg),
reaching adult levels by late adolescence. With adulthood, blood
pressure becomes slightly higher in males than females because more
force is necessary to distribute blood to the larger male body mass.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Physiologic changes are normal at some
point and adolescents must be able to
adopt these changes from time to time.
APOCRINE
SWEAT GLANDS
EFFECTS
• androgen stimulates sebaceous glands to extreme
activity, sometimes resulting in acne, a common
adolescent skin problem

• glands present in the axillae and genital area)

form shortly after puberty. Apocrine sweat glands
produce a strong odor in response to emotional
stimulation.
RECOMMENDATIONS
•S top comparing yourself to others, but
rather let the kids see that you’re
comfortable in your own skin.

• Therefore, adolescents must shower or

bathe more frequently than when they were
younger in order to be free of body odor
BODY IMAGE

Adolescents who developed a strong sense of industry during their

school-age years have learned to solve problems and are best equipped
to adjust to their new body
image.
EFFECTS
• Their desire to look good and be accepted by others determines how
body image will influence their adolescence. Most of that influence comes
from stereotypes, messages from the media and the opinions of peers.

• Some adolescents, for example, are disappointed with their final height

• They are depressed to find, at the end of adolescence, they still look
much like ducks

• Adolescents are usually their own worst critics, never pleased with any
aspect of their bodies
RECOMMENDATION
• Point out their strengths: Each time you notice your children
are unhappy with their body image, help them see their
strengths. For example, subtly point out how nice their hair
looks, or how well a certain color suit them, etc.

• Invite them to have a positive and critical attitude and

develop good life habits that allow them to obtain what they
want in life.

• Speak openly about the normality and beauty of imperfections.

VOICE CHANGES
EFFECTS
•Through this process the voice may crack as the body adjusts
to a deeper tone of voice. This cracking is typically temporary
until the final lower pitch is reached.

•In boys, the larynx grows bigger, it tilts to a different angle

inside the neck and part of it sticks out at the front of the
throat. This is the Adam’s Apple.

•In girls, the larynx also grows bigger but not as much as a boy’s
does, which is why girls don’t have prominent Adam’s Apple.
RECOMMENDATION
• If your son is concerned, stressed, or embarrassed about
the sound of his voice, let him know that it’s only temporary
and that everyone goes through it to some extent. After a
few months, he’ll likely have a resonant, deep, and full voice
just like and adult.

• Adolescents must refrain from pushing themselves from

reaching high notes when singing especially for boys because
when being forced, this may result to further harm and may
damage their voice box.
