Kinetic Energy and
Potential Energy
DEFINITION FORMULA

KINETIC ENERGY Directly proportional to K.E. = 1/2 m v2

the mass (kg) of the
object and to the
square of its velocity
(m/s)
POTENTIAL Energy an object has  P.E. = mgh
because of its position
ENERGY relative to some other
object.
EXAMPLE PROBLEMS
What is the KE of a 1500 kg car going at
suburban speed of 14 m/s .
Formula
Given: m = 1500 kg K.E. = 1/2 m v2
v = 14 m/s
KE = ??? = ½ 1500 kg (14 m/s) 2

= ½ 1500 kg (196 m2/s2)

= 294,00kg m2/s2 / 2
K.E = 147,000 J
MODULES PROBLEMS
1. You serve a volley ball with a mass of 2.1kg. The
ball leaves your hand at 30m/s
Formula
Given: m = 2.1 kg
v = 30 m/s K.E. = 1/2 m v2
KE = ????
= ½ 2.1 kg (

= ½ 2.1 kg ( 900

= ½ 2.1 kg ( 900

=1890 kg. / 2
KE = ??????
MODULES PROBLEMS
.
2 Calculate the kinetic energy of a truck that has a mass of 2900kg
and is moving at 55m/s

Formula
Given: m = 2900 kg
v = 55 m/s K.E. = 1/2 m v2
KE = ???? =
½ 2900kg ( 55 m/s) 2
=1/2 2900 kg (3025 )
= 8772500 / 2
KE = ????
MODULES PROBLEMS
3. A bullet has a mass of 0.0042kg. The muzzle velocity of the bullet
coming out of the barrel of the rifle is 993m/s. What is the KE of the
bullet as it exits the gun barrel?

Given: m = 0.0042 kg
Formula
v = 993 m/s
KE = ???? K.E. = 1/2 m v 2
MODULES PROBLEMS
3. A bullet has a mass of 0.0042kg. The muzzle velocity of the bullet
coming out of the barrel of the rifle is 993m/s. What is the KE of the
bullet as it exits the gun barrel?

Given: m = 0.0042 kg
Formula
v = 993 m/s
KE = ???? K.E. = 1/2 m v 2
POTENTIAL ENERGY
Potential energy is energy an object has because of its
position relative to some other object.

formula is P.E. = mgh

EXAMPLE PROBLEMS
A cart is loaded with a brick and pulled at constant speed
along an inclined plane to the height of a seat-top. If the
mass of the loaded cart is 3.0 kg and the height of the seat
top is 0.45 meters, then what is the potential energy of the
loaded cart at the height of the seat-top?
Given: m = 3.0 kg PE = m*g*h
h = 0.45 m
g= 9.8 m/s/s PE = (3 kg )x(9.8 m/s/s)x (0.45 m)
PE = 13.2 J
MODULE PROBLEMS
1. What is the potential energy of a 3kg
ball that is on the ground?
MODULE PROBLEMS
2. There is a bell at the top of a tower that is 45m
high. The bell weighs 190kg. Calculate it the PE
Given: m = 190 kg PE = m*g*h
h = 45 m PE = (190kg )x(9.8 m/s/s)x (45 m)
g= 9.8 m/s/s
PE = _____ J
MODULE PROBLEMS
3. A 75kg refrigerator is located on the 70th floor of a
skyscraper (300m above ground). What is the potential
energy of the refrigerator?

Given: m = 75 kg PE = m*g*h
h = 30 m PE = (75kg )x(9.8 m/s/s)x (30 m)
g= 9.8 m/s/s
PE = _____ J
MODULE PROBLEMS
4. A 10kg mass is lifted to a height of 2m. What
is its potential energy at this position?

Given: m = 10 kg PE = m*g*h
h=2m PE = (10kg )x(9.8 m/s/s)x (2 m)
g= 9.8 m/s/s
PE = _____ J
MEMORY TEXT
I can do all things through him who
strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13

When things aren’t going as planned, when life is hard,
don’t be too sad and don’t give up. Know that the hard
times will pass. Good days are in store. And know that
you can make it, you can do it. Just keep asking God for
help. Stay positive. And, let Christ’s strength see you
through it all.
