Introduction
 The UN was established after World War
II with the aim of preventing future wars.
 It succeeded the ineffective League of

Nations. 
 Adopted on 25 June 1945 and took effect on

24 October 1945.
 At its founding, the UN had 51 member

states; this number grew to 193 in 2011.

Objectives

• To promote International peace & security


• The peacekeeping force as a whole received

the Nobel Peace Prize in 1988.

Role of the United Nations in resolving conflict

 Helped in the eradication of poverty.


 Helped in improvement of education.
 End 13-year old war between South Africa and

Angola.
 Dispute settlement in Soviet Union.
 South Africa, Kazakhstan, and the other

countries who gave up the Bomb.
