Common bile duct
The common bile duct is a small, tube-like structure formed where the
common hepatic duct and the cystic duct join.
Its physiological role is to carry bile from the gallbladder and empty it
into the upper part of the small intestine (the duodenum).
The purpose of the bile duct is usually to transport bile from the liver along with the
gallbladder into the duodenum, the leading part of the small intestine pursuing the
stomach.
The bile it possess interacts with consumed fats and fat-soluble vitamin supplements to
allow them to be ingested by the intestine.
The right and the left hepatic ducts emerge at the porta hepatis from the right and left
lobes of the liver.
The arrangement of structures at the porta hepatis from behind forwards is:
- the branches of the portal vein
-hepatic artery
-hepatic ducts
