Water Supply and Sewerage

Project
By
Dr. Jyothi Roopa. S.K
The aim of the project is to conduct detailed survey of the
village by using Total Station

+ water supply and sewerage system for the village is to be

designed

+ Pipe lines of both water and sewage

+ water supply overhead tank and waste water treatment

plant are to plotted after designing them

+ Different fittings for both water supply line and sewerage

system are to shown on village map as symbols and indicated
in legend
The name of the village where the proposed project has to be done is Banahalli
near Kaiwara about 1 km away from your place of stay
Detailed survey of the village

13°20’13” N 77°59’24.70” E will be your starting point and Bench

mark RL is 887m

The starting point will be the point where the total station is first located.

All the required points are to be recorded in the total station and also as a
safety measure note down the coordinates of all the points taken in a log
book assigning a proper name for it.

In order to fit the map within the print out, a proper scale has to be chosen
while printing.
scale can be chosen as 1:500.
The water supply project :

Location of source of water

Location of overhead tank

Block level at overhead tank

Village mapping
The Sewerage project includes

Plan showing the Sewer lines in the streets and location of

different sewer appurtenances.

Location of sewage treatment plant and block leveling

Plotting both sewer lines along with appurtenances

Plotting the treatment plant on both village map and on block

level sheet
General Instructions for conducting the Total Station Survey
Locate the plane table and leveling instrument on the sides of the road

Divide the work among the batch mates as Total station operator,
recorder the coordinates and prism holder.

Take LS at an interval of every 15m, record the coordinates in the Total

station memory and record it manually also.

If there is any intersection of two or more streets, at the intersection

locate the point and record the coordinates.

Count number of houses on either side of each LS and write down.

If there are features like wells, bore well, temple or any such structures
other than houses, locate and record them.
Design of water supply scheme:

The design of the project starts from estimating the population which has to forecasted
based on population data and design period.

The population data has to be collected from local panchayat office

If data of the population is available for number of previous decades

Arithmetic mean method can be used to predict the future design

population.

If population data for many decades are not available then, the design population can be
taken as 1.3 times the present population

As per the water supply and treatment manual, the rate of water supply if the community
size is less than 20000 is 70 to 100 lpcd
Design of water supply scheme:

Fix the capacity of the storage reservoir as one day water

requirements.
The minimum residual pressure in the distribution system is
7m
It means that at the farthest end of the distribution after
taking all the head loss into consideration the minimum
head of water should be 7m
