Emergence of CSR
• CSR-policies, activities, or behaviour undertaken by
an organisation that goes beyond the traditional
economic and legal obligations of the firm
• Firms attempt to be “sustainable” or “socially
responsible”
• Firms act responsibly and behave ethically
• Organisation also has economic, legal, and
discretionary obligations to its target stakeholders
• Fierce competition exist- makes it difficult for
organisations to differentiate themselves from other
firms

organisations based on their ethical attributes rather
then on more traditional offerings such as the
location or the prices of the products it sells
• Firms that are considered to be socially responsible
are beginning to experience a positional advantage
over other firms as well as enhanced financial
performance

Role of Target Stakeholders
• Includes organisational (consumers, employees,

(local residents and interest and lobby groups),

stakeholder environment, the stronger the CSR
orientation.
