Definition:
Care given to a recent post partum
patient,who is not breast feeding.
Rationale for the Implementation of Nursing Action

1. Maintain proper support and cleanliness.


2. Prevent trauma to the nipples and infection.
Nursing Objective:
Teach patient proper breast care.
Equipments

Mild soap
Warm water
Clean wash cloth and towel
Wee-fitted support bra
Steps:

1. If the mother will not be breast feeding her infant,


she should be given medication within the first few
hours after delivery.
R: to suppress lactation
Steps:

2. The patient should always wash her hands thoroughly


before handling the breasts. The breast is washed with
warm water and soap on a wash cloth, using circular
motions from the nipple out.
R: To prevent infection in breast tissue because there are
pathogens on the skin and hands.

3. The breast should dried well but gently.


R: the dry environment discouraged bacterial growth.
Steps:
4. All postpartum should wear well fitted brassier or a
breast binder which will lift the breast upwards and
inwards.
R: It serve to relieve discomfort especially if breast
engorgement occurs and it also encourage the breast
to return to normal muscle tone.
5. Placed or used nursing pads, if the nipples leak and
changed when they become soiled
R: For protection, because a damp and soiled
environment enhanced the growth of infection
producing bacteria.
Steps:
6. Tender, painful cracked nipple should be exposed
to the air and medication also may prescribed.
R: to promote healing

7.A tight-fitting binders indicted if the breast do


become engorged. It usually goes beneath the
axilla and arrived the back and laps over the front.
It may be secured snugly by a series of safety
pins.
R: to relieve engorgement and make th mother
comfortable.

Observations:
a. watch closely for the signs of infection such as redness
and heat.
b. check daily for cracks and fissures.
