SUBJECT:

TAILLESS AIRCRAFT
INTRODUCTION
1)Tailless aircraft refers to aircraft with no distinct
horizontal stabilizing surfaces in their tail section.
2) A tailless aircraft (often tail-less) has no other
horizontal surface besides its main wing.
3)The aerodynamic control and stabilization
functions in both pitch and roll are incorporated
into the main wing.
4)Theoretical advantages of the tailless
configuration include low parasitic drag and good
stealth characteristics.
OVERVIEW

THE SCOPE OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO

BUILD A SCALED DOWN MODEL OF A
TAILLESS AIRCRAFT AND STUDY ITS
PERFORMANCE CHARECTERISTICS
COMPARED.

TESTS AND RESULTS
TRAIL 1 : FOAM SHEET
RESULT : FAILED

TRAIL 2 : P.V.C FOAM SHEET

RESULT : FAILED

TRAIL 3 : BALSA WOOD

RESULT : NOT SUCCESSFUL

TRAIL 4 : STYRO FOAM

RESULT : NOT SUCCESSFUL

TRAIL 5 : DEPRON SHEET

RESULT : SUCCESSFULL
TEST FLIGHT PARAMETERS OF CURRENT DESIGN

SPEED = 30Km/hr

ENDURANCE = 20 MINS

STABILITY: GOOD

RANGE = 500 MTRS

RATE OF CLIMB : 4 ft/s

LIFT AND DRAG: LOW INTERFERENCE DRAG

THRUST = 1500 GRAMS

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES WHEN
COMPARED TO A TAILED AIRCRAFT
Advantage:
1. LOWER PROFILE AND INTERFERENCE DRAG
2. INCREASED SPEED AND STEALTH
3. LIFT TO DRAG RATIO INCREASES BY 20-25%
4. REDUCED WEIGHT
5. ENGINES POSITION
6. ROLL CONTROL IS MORE EFFICIENT
Disadvantage:
1. VERTICAL TAKEOFF IS NOT PRACTICAL
2. DIRECTIONAL CONTROL IS DIFFICULT
3. DOES NOT PROVIDE THE BEST AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE
FUTURE SCOPE

› THE PROJECT CAN BE FURTHER MODIFIED TO PROVIDE

GREATER THRUST AND ENDURANCE. IT CAN ALSO BE MODIFIED

TO ACHIEVE GREATER MANUVERABILITY.

COST ESTIMATION:
Depron : Rs 1200
Brushless motor: Rs 3000
Battery 3 cell : Rs 1500
Servo (250x2) : Rs 500
Tx and rx : Rs 9000
Esc : Rs 3200
Propeller :Rs 255
Landing Gears :Rs 300
----------------------------------------------------
Total : Rs 18955
CONCLUSION
 Compared to a conventional aircraft, a tailless
aircraft can be more beneficial. A tailless aircraft
has reduced profile and interference drag because
it has fewer surfaces facing the airflow and the
airflow only passes over one aerofoil. It also has
reduced weight and greater speed and stealth
characteristics.
