Planit BHA Analysis

Positive Displacement Mud Motors

Sperry-Sun 2004
Understanding
the Planit Output
BHA Schematics
The diagram on the
left shows the detail
of the BHA with
respect to the
stabilizer, pad and
bend sizes and their
distances from the
bit. This can be
seen when the
Motor Configuration
window is opened.

The diagram on
the right shows the
results for the
Equilibrium Rate
calculation with
respect to the
points of contact
and the forces
involved.

Deflection of the BHA off the hole center line - Deflection graph
To access the Deflection graph, click on the d button. Use this graph to
view the distance of the BHA from the centerline. This graph shows the drill
string displacement more precisely than the Profile graph. The top right
corner of the window shows the maximum deflection value.

This example clearly shows the top of
the motor and 2nd stab being deflected
beyond the confines of the wellbore.

The well bore is 8.5” with a maximum

deflection of 1.58” from the centerline
for a 6.75” Mud Motor. The maximum
deflection allowed for wall contact =
(8.5-6.75)/2 = 0.875”. This means the
maximum deflection has been
exceeded by 0.705”

When the
stabilizer shows
no contact – it is
either floating
and not making
contact or
outside the
confines of the
well bore.
Slope Misalignment – Slope misalignment of the drill string relative to
the axis of the hole.
Bending Moment – this shows the bending moment applied to the drill
string. The top right corner of the window shows the maximum
moment applied.
Shear Force – This graph shows the shear forces acting on the BHA
and the top right corner shows the maximum shear force applied.

A Typical 6.3/4” Steerable BHA – 1.15˚ ABH

Note the Form.

Index = 1 and
BUR of 9.93˚/100’
If this is changed
to 50, the build
rate would be
significantly less
and closer to the
actual seen.
BHA Data Entry – Stabilizer distances

To show three stabilizers on the

BHA schematic, the bit distance to
Stb2 must be less than bit to Stb3.
If it is not, then the “Normalization
Error” will appear. If the distance
is input the same, then the
program takes the blade OD entry
from the motor configuration.
BHA Data Entry – Stabilizer Gauge

If the Stb2 is
UG, the DC may
or may not
contact the well
bore. Increasing
the Stb2 OD
may remove this
error.
Deflections are typical and as expected.
