Melinda undergoes a journey of self-discovery and expression through her art projects in school. She uses nature and geometric designs to work through feelings of alienation from her peers, family, and loss of identity following a traumatic experience. Through her artwork chronicling trees and influences from Cubism, she is able to process emotional withdrawal, depression, and eventually find acceptance. Various symbols in the novel like seasons, a janitor's closet, school mascots, and a dissection represent her transformation. Art provides an outlet for Melinda to speak without words about her pain.
