Cell Analogy

A cell can be compared to a city

 Each part of the cell has its own function or purpose

 Theparts of the cell can be compared to the parts of a city
based on their similar purpose
Let’s compare!

Cell Part Cell Analogy

 A.Cell A. City
 B.Cell Membrane B. City Limits
 C.Cytoplasm C. Environment
 D.Nucleus D. City Hall
 E.Nuclear Membrane E. Police Force
 F.Ribosomes F. Factories and Workers
 G.Endoplasmic Reticulum G. Highways and Roads
 H.Golgi Bodies H. Post Office
 I.Mitochondria I. Power Plant
 J.Lysosomes J. Recycling or Garbage Dump
Create a Cell Analogy

I will split the class into three groups

 Each group will brainstorm their own analogy to use (past
analogies include- a farm, a school, a space station, a hockey
rink)
 Eachstudents will be responsible for two cell organelles (ie
John is comparing the nucleus and the cell wall), if you can’t
decide I can randomly assign each student an organelle
Requirements

 Each student will create an analogy for their cell organelle (ex the
cell membrane is represented by the city limits)
 The student is then responsible to make a drawing (or use pictures
that you find) to depict the comparison (ex endoplasmic reticulum
is represented by highways in a city so you would draw a picture of
a road)
 The group will then make a chart to briefly summarize all the
comparisons (see example to follow)
For each organelle

 State the name of your object/place (ex police force)

 The name of the cell part it corresponds to (ex nuclear membrane)
 Why you selected that item to represent the cell part (ex I choose this because
the nuclear membrane protects the nucleus of the cell)
 Must be in complete sentences.
 Example: B: The town hall represents the nucleus because its function is to
control the town’s activities
The Final Product

 Your map/picture must be neat, colorful, correctly

labeled, and explain your comparison.
 Use pencil first then color.
 Be creative! Have fun with it.
 Have a group summary chart/ legend
 Past examples included underwater cities, prehistoric
cities, a skate park, amusement parks, etc…

Is there a good explanation of the There is no The student only The student gave a The student uses full
comparison the student chose explanation of the described the function brief description of sentences and
cell organelle of the cell organelle the cell organelle and completely explains
provided comparison how the cell organelle
is similar to the object
they chose

Does the picture used fit into the The picture is The picture is slightly The picture fits into The student did
theme unrelated to theme related to the theme the theme something more than a
picture

Is the comparison page neat and The page is messy The picture is well The page is neat and The page is neat and
attractive done but writing is coloured the student took extra
messy effort to make it
attractive

Does the group have a key to follow There is no key The group included a The group included a The group included a
(include- cell organelle, comparison key but it is does not key and all info is key and put extra effort
and function) include all info included to make it stand out
