Bandwidth Efficiency

Bandwidth Efficiency

 refers to the information rate that can be

transmitted over a given bandwidth in a specific
communication system.
 It is a measure of how efficiently a limited
frequency spectrum is utilized by the physical
layer protocol, and sometimes by the media
access control.
Bandwidth Efficiency

 Comparing the performance of one digital

modulation technique to another.
 it is indicate as a number of bits to a transmission
medium for each hertz of bandwidth
 sometimes called information density or spectral
efficiency, often used to compare the performance
of one digital modulation technique to another.
Formula of Bandwidth:

Bŋ =

= = =

Bŋ = bandwidth Efficiency
Problem Solving:
 Fora 16-PSK and a transmission system with a 10 kHz
bandwidth, determine the maximum bit rate.

 For an 8-PSK system, operating with an information bit rate of

24 kbps. Determine the Bandwidth Efficiency.

Given:
Bps = 24 kbps (24,000)
Hz = 8-PSK (8,000)

Formula and Solution:

Bŋ =
= = =

Bη = 24, 000 / 8000

= 3 bits per second per cycle of bandwidth

Given:
Bps = 16-PSK (Quadbits, 4)
Hz = 10 Hz (10,000)

Formula and Solution:

Bŋ =
= = =

Bη = 4 * 10000
= 40,000 bps
The bandwidth efficiency for 16-PSK is 4, which means that four
bits can be propagated through the system for each hertz of
bandwidth. Therefore, the maximum bit rate is simply the product
of the bandwidth and the bandwidth efficiency, or
bit rate = 4 x 10,000 = 40,000 bps
