Flexural Behaviour of Filler Slab

Project analysis slide 2

Abstract

Due to rapid urbanization, there is an increase in demand of residential and commercial buildings which results in greater use of
cement for construction thereby depleting the environment. The excessive usage of cement has led to the implementation of greener
approach in building construction. Filler slab is an environment friendly, alternative building technology which is being used in the
present era. Filler slabs reduces the amount of concrete use d as certain amount of concrete in tension zone of the slab is replaced by the
filler materials. In this study coconut shells are used as filler materials.Coconut shell provides good thermal insulation and is also a
waste product obtained from coconut trees. Since the waste materials are inert, light in weight, they qualify to be a good filler materi al
in the slab.

Assessment Zoning
In the present era, there is map
increase in demand of concrete for building construction due to urbanization. However, due to depletion of
non-renewable resources, production of concrete is affected. Excessive usage of concrete leads to increase in CO2 production thereby
causing global warming. Therefore, reducing concrete in building construction is one of the solutions to the mentioned problem. Hence
to cater to the problem, an alternate building technology such as filler slabs is adopted. Filler slabs are the type of slabs where filler
materials are used in the tension zone of slab as a partial replacement for concrete in that region. Since, concrete does not play any role
in withstanding the load in tension zone, some portion of concrete can be replaced by the filler materials. The filler materials used
should be inert, light in weight, uniform shape, economical and readily available. In this study, coconut shells is used as filler materials.
Coconut shell has a good Vulnerabity
thermal insulation property.

 Aim

To study the Flexural Behaviour and Crack Pattern of Filler Slab using Cocunut Shell.

 Objectives

• To determine the load bearing capacity of filler slab using cocunut shell.
• To estimate the amount of concrete saved as a result of cocunut shell introduction into the core of the slab
• To study the structural behaviour of filler slab

 Scope

• The major scope of this project is to utilize the waste material such as cocunut shells as filler material which is a good thermal
insulation property
• Also to determine the different paramters like durability and design optimization of filler materila

Flood Vulnerability Index Map. Evidently, highly vulnerable

regions correspond with areas of high population density and
settlements and even road network despite assigning lower
weights.

Population, settlements and structures and road network are

the most vulnerable to flood hazard. The population map is
denser than the settlements, because the population map has
considered the population at the tourist attractions as well.
Millions of tourists visit many of the popular destinations,
making some of the regions more

The higher flood risk regions are the areas that are not only
highly populated, with larger settlements, more buildings and
tourist attractions, but also receive high precipitation and
have large number of drainage networks. These areas are
also mostly valleys surrounded by steep mountains.

plants are situated in very high-risk regions.

The flood risk evaluation map has historical flood events data overlaid on the risk
map. The dot densities represented by small blue dots indicate small number of
flood events, where as the large purple ones indicate large number of major flood
events. From the map, it is evident that majority of the purple dots coincide with
red high-risk regions. This shows that the method and the data sets used in this
research produced verifiable results in relation to historically recorded flood events.
These results could definitely be improved with better data, inputs and applying
qualitative methods.

INFERENCE

 Regions highly prone to flood events are identified .The role of recognized precipitation and drainage
networks.
 Many historical flood events took place in the high-risk zones.
 Using the flood risk maps, several measures could be taken to improve the disaster management
methods in the future. For example , distance from the river networks could be considered to develop
better strategies to protect the settlements in case of a disaster.
 Road network and drainage network maps could be used to plan evacuation routes.
 Factors like deforestation, constructions projects and hydro power plant projects have increased the
frequency and intensity of floods.
 Power plant projects involve digging and blasting of vast land areas, and since Uttarakhand is in a
seismically active zone, these activities make the region more unstable, and lead to multiple disasters
like floods, landslides and mudslides.
 There is a lot of scope for further analysis in this regard. The Geostatistical analysis could shed more
light on the correlation between power plants and flood hazard. More comprehensive hydroelectric
power plant data with geological and vegetation data could also be considered in the future works.
